Eh.  I want to like this game. I really do.

Heh. I'll try to like it, but no promises.

Isn't this exactly the same as the last trailer posted for this game?

EDIT: Yep.

Would be way more interested in this if it wasn't called "XCOM". I love the old X-COM games so much, all I'll be able to think about while playing this is that I'd rather be playing those.

I kind of feel this would have been better off as a new IP without baggage of what people feel XCOM should be..

Looks rough.

BETRAYAL!!!

#9 Posted by wolf_blitzer85 (5293 posts) -

It's funny that these aliens can teleport and do all sorts of crazy shit, but they still need to hide behind sandbags.

#10 Posted by fox01313 (5089 posts) -

Looks neat & want to play it. The only good alien is a happy alien (as it's locked in a rocket surrounded by robots screaming at it while on a 1-way trip into a star).

XCom is a great series. A great top-down, turn-based series.

Take it easy there, Spoony.

@ImperiousRix: glad someone got the reference

I am really interested in this game. From everything I have heard about it, it sounds good so far.

#15 Posted by WiqidBritt (580 posts) -

I like the extradimentional look of the alien stuff... could be neat

#16 Posted by 234r2we232 (3181 posts) -

Really looking forward to seeing more of this. Easily looks like the most interesting thing coming out next year :D

And hey guys. I know you're trying your little hearts out to hate this, but it still has a year of development to go. Criticising early gameplay footage for being "rough" seems kinda silly. Just saying.

Please be good.

Amen brother. Really, this game doesn't look half bad. It's just the part where they're needlessly taking the name of a franchise that I think is pretty awesome and attaching it to this FPS that happens to feature goo aliens.
#19 Posted by Garr123 (14 posts) -

It'sreally confusing that they decided to switch the setting to the 1950's, yet ditch the aliens from the first game, which were based off of classic 50's alien imagery.  The goofy geometric monsters and derivative, glowing blue dudes are a huge step down from the iconic aliens of the first game.

Also, that it's a generic looking first-person shooter using the name of a beloved strategy series.  That kinda sucks, too.

#20 Posted by strangeling (1260 posts) -

So they aren't inky blob creatures any more? They're 3D digitized physical holograms or something now? Or just two different class of enemies?

#21 Posted by Selftest (72 posts) -

Was gonna bitch about the roughness, and then I saw the release date. This game looks fun!

#22 Posted by HubrisRanger (488 posts) -

Is this not the exact same trailer that was posted last week?

Comes out the same day as Mass Effect 3. I'm betting this gets delayed.

#25 Posted by paulwade1984 (479 posts) -

no.
just no.
im not gonna pay money for this

I'm happy to see some graphics with some style. Not everything needs to try and push the boundaries of realism. Seems to have some character.

#27 Posted by ahoodedfigure (4240 posts) -

I guess it's going to have some strategic elements, but c'mon guys. Just say you're inspired by X-Com, you want to take it in a shootery direction or whatever but use a different name.  You've got a renowned company, and interesting concept...  BELIEVE IN YOURSELVES!!

I would be down for an updated, better looking version of that. I could see that being a downloadable. But make the aliens look like they do in the original.

this.  This game is just another brainless attempt to cash in on a name that doesn't belong on it.

FPS or RTS?

#33 Posted by zombie007 (102 posts) -

Hey look, chest high walls -.-

Where is my real X-COM? =(

#34 Posted by RetroVirus (1492 posts) -

I think it's a huge mistake to put this out the same day as Mass Effect 3.

This trailer made the game look completely derivative.  A little bit of Gears, a little bit of Halo, a lot of HL2.  The animations are dull, designs are a mixed bag, and the setting is jarring in a bad way.  It's just a trailer, so who knows what the finished product will look like a year from now.  Let's hope they innovate a bit in the meantime, or that they've already created some innovative features that they felt, for whatever reason, they needed to hold back from showcasing.

There has been ONE good XCOM game.  People acting like it's a sacred cow are fucking ridiculous.  Not only have there already been several mediocre games released under the XCOM name, that series lost its prestige within two years, and it's not like the existence of a new game is going to delete the first one from the universe.

And asking why they aren't making it like a dated strategy RPG is hilarious.  Because a) people who like XCOM would hate it anyway because it's not an exact replica of the first XCOM (which is the only thing they'd ever tolerate), and b) people who don't like XCOM would hate it because it's just more XCOM.

When companies design their enemies in such a generic way, do they actually think they're making something cool? Generic glowey, metallic, slightly organic bad dudes always make me groan nowadays.

#40 Posted by UlquioKani (1195 posts) -

seems like a mix of the conduit, team fortress and homefront. Doesn't look like fun either

I liked them better when they were a giant cube or a circle.

@Brodehouse: I obviously cant speak for all X-com fans but to me you're being a little narrow-minded (or maybe just a bit bored of people bitching about X-com?) The reason I love the original - and Terror from the Deep which was a great game too! - is because it did things pretty much no other game has done since: When you're in charge of X-com, you are in fucking charge. You get given the mandate but after that it is all on you. You pick the bases, the people, the equipment, everything.

Thats what made X-com special for me, not the fact it was even turn based or had a 50s aesthetic - it was the scope of the game, growing your organization from a dozen people out of a single base to a hundred out of a network of bases in such a personal and involved way is still fun for me today. That's also why all the games since then, including this one, are such a dissapointment - they're totally ignoring the thing, that for me at least, was so special and unique about the first two games.

Again, I don't want a 1:1 for remake, I'd just like to know that Enemy Unknown and Terror from the Deep aren't the only two games I'll ever get to play if I want to enjoy that kind of experience.

@ahoodedfigure
Dude you don't just make Xcom games the same over and over, turn based to turn based, you need some variety to keep things from getting stale and this looks amazing! Look at   Red faction with the series landing great games with huge success and Red faction changed from fps to third person open world during that time, but if you just want them to make the same type of game with little to no major differences then hey look no further then pokemon......

Yeah, because then ME3 will sink like a stone. I guess you work for EA, huh?
#45 Posted by JohnPaulVann (209 posts) -

I still play XCOM: UFO defense on the PSX with great regularity.

#46 Posted by kelbear (491 posts) -

I don't like the pacing shown in this trailer. It should be a very slow and very deliberate growth from getting wtfpwned by any alien, with a very healthy fear of the unknown, to a roughly even footing through scrounging for the scraps of the few aliens you managed to bring down with the men you've lost.

#47 Posted by Xpgamer7 (2400 posts) -

This is the same trailer as the last one.

#48 Posted by csl316 (9478 posts) -

Hmm... now intrigued.

#49 Posted by Kinggi (288 posts) -

Not feeling this...something looks really off. Doesnt help there seems to be big performance issues in their own trailer.

So tired of shooters.
