In The Darkness, you play the role of Jackie Estacado as he gets possessed by a Dark Entity on his 21st birthday. Based on the comic series of the same name.
Overview
The Darkness is a game based on a comic series of the same name. Early on, the lead character is infested by a tentacle demon entity that feeds on human hearts. The Dark Creature has a mind of it's own and speaks to the lead character usually expressing it's anger in your actions. It is unclear if normal people can see the infestation. The subway station is the central hub for most of the game. The Darkness is single player for the story mode and features a basic multi-player mode consisting of average death-match type modes.Phone Calling Mechanic
The Darkness allows the player to makes phone calls to produce various results. The pay phone will allow you to advance the story, find easter eggs, or unlock various things like characters for multiplayer usage. you can find them scattered around the City or by doing sub-missions .Darkness Powers
In the game, you acquire special abilities called "Darkness Powers." These only work during the dark, so if you are in a well-lit area, they won't work as effectively. The following are the types of Darkness Powers you can posses:- Creeping Dark - This is a used like a scouting device. A piece of your tentacle will detach from you and will be able to crawl through spaces that Jackie isn't able to crawl through. You can also pick locks and knock out lights and enemies as well.
- Demon Arm - This power is used like a melee weapon. If you are close to an enemy, you can almost instantly kill them by piercing them through their heart. It can also take out lights to preserve your Darkness powers.
- Darkness Guns - These two pistols look and act as regular guns, but they have infinite ammo. One pistol shoots a focused beam of darkness, while the other shoots out bigger shells that cause more damage. They use your Darkness energy instead of the typical ammo supply.
- Black Hole - This power shoots a big black hole, causing anyone by it to be caught in it. If an enemy is by it, they will twist up in the air for an allotted time. Once the black hole is finished, the enemy falls back on the ground dead.
Plot
The story begins with the main character Jackie Estacado on his twenty first birthday. The game is set in a realistic New York City, and is complete with real districts. You are introduced to Jackie's girlfriend Jenny. Instead of a case of beer, Jackie is granted with strange powers calling themself "The Darkness". Jackie is involved in the mob, and at the beginnning of the game the player finds out that he is wanted dead by a character named Uncle Paulie. The game takes many turns, and Jackie uses his newfound powers to escape being killed by Uncle Paulie's Hitmen, and Eddie Shrote, a corrupt policeman. Eventually, Jackie discovers that Eddie and Paulie have captured Jenny, and Jackie goes to rescue her. After a long chase, Jackie witnesses Paulie and Shrote shooting Jenny in the head. Jackie is so emotional that after seeing this he "kills" himself. Instead of being dead for good though, he is thrust by the Darkness into a limbo type world with World War One soldiers that are unable to die, but continue to fight the war. In this hellish world, Jackie discovers that his ancestor, Anthony has brought this "Darkness" into the family. This ancestor reveals to Jackie how to defeat the Darkness, but just before he is about to invade the castle that houses the Darkness' core, he is brought back to the living world.Jackie Estacado decides now that he will kill Shrote and goes to the apartment that he lives in. He isn't able to kill Shrote, but manages to snag a briefcase full of incriminating evidence. He tells Shrote over the phone that he has the briefcase, and arranges a meeting with him. Jackie meets him, and gives him the briefcase, but has armed it with explosives. He detonates the briefcase, killing himself and Shrote, and returns to the hellish limbo world. Jackie and Anthony attack the castle, but Anthony dies in the process, and is put to rest eternally. Throughout the game, Jackie has been leery of The Darkness' control on him. Despite this, he accepts the Darkness completely, and it tells him that each time he kills a man, it will consume him even more.
Despite these warnings, Jackie sets out on a mission to kill Uncle Paulie for good. Earlier in the game, Jackie learned of a drug shipment that Paulie would be overseeing. He lays siege onto the shipment, and Paulie escapes to a lighthouse on a nearby island. Jackie gives chase, and rips apart Paulie's guards. He finally reaches Paulie, but it is very obvious that if Jackie kills Paulie, he will be completely engulfed by the Darkness. He kills Paulie anyways, and Jackie is consumed by the Darkness.
In the final scenes of the game, Jackie enters in a dream-like state, similar to what death might be like. He is lying in Jenny's arms, and she explains that they only have a few minutes together. The game ends with Jackie "waking up."
