    The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall

Game » consists of 3 releases. Released Aug 30, 1996

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall from Bethesda Softworks is an enormous RPG and sequel to The Elder Scrolls: Arena. It includes a massive gameworld and pioneering freeform play. It was well received for these factors, but was criticised for a number of crippling bugs.

Since elder scrolls daggerfall is free...

I am just wondering, can any computer nowadays run it? if so, how stable is it?

I know that this may not belong here, but the daggerfall board here is... kinda dead, I am just curious about playing one of the older games just to see how it was.

    @Chabbs0:

eh... just go there, the last post there was 1 year ago. I think it would take at least a month just to get a single answer.

And I am just wondering if any machine can handle it nowadays, kinda like deus ex. (stupid question probably, but I would like to actually know please.)

Daggerfall is one of the most notoriously buggy PC games ever made.  Even if it can run on your computer, you'd probably need to patch and mod the hell out of it just to make it playable.

It's a hard game to get running right, and even then it is a pretty fruitless journey the game was something, for its time, but now its like ever cliche rolled into a world with no direction I find it hard to play after something like Morrowind.

The official Bethesda website's downloads section.

And if anyone is interested, I've got a buddy who's working on a transfer project. By that, I mean he's building an engine to run the game on modern systems. It's a huge undertaking, but hopefully we'll see a release of some kind in our lifetime.

It's a Obsidian games so if it's working fine without any problems you've either installed it wrong or installed the wrong game.

No, it's a Bethesda game, though neither company is particularly good with their QA.

Even if you posted this on the Daggerfall boards it still would have come up on the main page. People would have clicked it regardless because your threads are notorious for being hilarious/awful.

And you would need to Emulate DOS to being able to get it work too.

My computer can run it fine. You'll have to download Dosbox to run it, which can be a little bit of a hastle to set up. Be warned about Daggerfall: you start off in a crazy hard dungeon, and some of the side quests seem to be broken, in that a character you may be asked to assassinate may not exist.

I had it installed and running under Vista on my laptop before it died (unrelated). The controls are effin weird and unusable with a touchpad. Also you may want to check youtube for some help with the install.

@Jay444111:  There are some downloads floating around on some sites that let you launch the game without having to deal with DOSbox, I recommend you get one of those.

Pretty sure the bethesda section where you download this has tips on how to get it to run man.  At least it used to.  Try running it through dosbox, it isn't really that complicated.

I just went through the process this weekend of installing Arena and Daggerfall on my laptop.  I knew I wouldn't get much enjoyment out of them, but I just wanted the challenge of getting them running.

Basically, you first go to Dosbox's site and download the appropriate emulator for your system.  The go to Elderscrolls.com to download the packages, which include PDF instructions on how to get these bad boys working in dosbox.  Arena is just 10 MB, while Daggerfall unpacked is a 400 MB beast (it's got FMV and everything).  The PDF instructions will take you step-by-step through this involved process.  And it is involved!  For Daggerfall, you have to command-line mount the CD image inside dosbox, then go through the entire mid-nineties install process.

Once it's all done, you can create your character and see the sweet video clip of your emperor charging you with an epic quest, which somehow starts you off in a dungeon where rats and bats will beat your ass!
