Backwards Dragons, Broken Resistances in Skyrim Patch

Posted by patrickklepek (3398 posts) -

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’s version 1.2 patch is not the savior we have been looking for. Cue the sound of a sad violin.

Bethesda Game Studios issuing patches for its games that end up fixing some things while also conveniently breaking others is not a new occurrence, but what’s being broken with version 1.2 may encourage you to hold off a bit.

I’m not going to hold dragons flying backwards against the game--that sounds (and looks!) awesome.

The real problem is for players who invested into magic resistance for their character, as the patch appears to make all of those now null and void. These even applies to NPCs with innate magical attributes.

The low-resolution texture issue affecting the Xbox 360 version when installed appears to be inconsistently fixed, too.

There’s a message board thread keeping tabs on the reported issues, but Bethesda has not issued an official statement on the matter. When that inevitably changes, I’ll update this story with the company's comments. Report your own issues below.

Damn, well I have work to do anyway. I doubt I will be really getting much Skyrim in today anyway.

Glad I waited to get this. Looks like I'll be waiting even longer.

Fuck you, Bethesda. I like Skyrim and all but this is just stupid, fuck you.

Hmm maybe I'll play Skyrim offline to avoid this patch.

The only statement you will get from them will be "we´re looking into it". They are not exactly good about support or anything once a game has been released.

Funny thing is, Todd Howard mentioned some "faster way" they were going to have in order to patch the game or at least adjust some internal values.. well, if 2 weeks is a "fast" turnaround time for a patch/hotfix that doesn´t really fix stuff, then I don´t know if he was right.

Good thing I only dabble in destruction magic

Even though I'm on 360, I'm going to hold off until another patch hits. I don't want to bork things at all.

Luckily, this means I can play more Dark Souls since that patch just hit, as well as Alice, Shadows of the Damned, and Deus Ex. = D

#13 Posted by PAkman5009 (39 posts) -

I guess I'm still waiting to play Skyrim 8(

#14 Posted by RE_Player1 (7545 posts) -

I'm glad I stuck to my original plan, get the GOTY edition next year. It was tempting though, some Black Friday deals had Skyrim for $40.

Looks like I'm going to have to unplug my Xbox. I was looking forward to this.

#16 Posted by wefwefasdf (6729 posts) -

Looks like I'm going to wait to play until the next patch comes out. I love my character way too much to have it get destroyed through glitches.

#17 Posted by NewfieBullet (87 posts) -

God damn it I stopped playing a week ago and waited for this patch!! But I'll take backwards flying dragons.

#18 Posted by Binny (95 posts) -

There looks to be a lot of you who have never played a Elder Scrolls game from launch. This is all normal.

#19 Posted by Nymphonomicon (97 posts) -

Is there anyplace for me to air grievances about dragons running away from battle? I suppose I could wait until Festivus, but so far I've killed a handful of dragons and had at least three of them run(or fly) away from me before I could turn them into a big skeleton with clipping issues.

Bethesda...common.

#21 Posted by kerse (2100 posts) -

Uhh what the hell, I'm gonna have to play this offline now, I deeply invested in magic resistances.

#22 Posted by ghostNPC (761 posts) -

Guess I'll just wait till boxing day for it to come on sale. Should hopefully be fixed by then. :/

#23 Posted by Branthog (7340 posts) -

Yeah, I'm in no hurry to play Skyrim. I pre-ordered it. Pre-downloaded it. Played for four hours. Have not touched it since launch day. It's fine and everything, but it's not like it's going anywhere and it'll just be better (at least a bit) later on. And, frankly, I' not all that impressed by the "amazing and stunning graphics" everyone keeps wetting themselves over (frankly, it looks a bit jank like any other Bethesda game on the PC looks).

There are a ton of games to get to right now - a lot that may not have a long multiplayer community life in them even, so I'm focusing on enjoying those while they can still be enjoyed. Skyrim will still be sitting there next winter, for me.

Downloaded the patch, installed the game. FUUUUUUUN!!

#25 Posted by ExplodeMode (852 posts) -

A Bethesda fix that doesn't break something else isn't a Bethesda fix.  On my game everyone in Riverwood is frozen in place.  They don't move or go to sleep, they are static like it's 1995.

Well I have no magic resistance, but as a full mage, I really don't mind everyone losing their magical resistance except for my atronachs....and dragons flying backwards.

@Binny

There looks to be a lot of you who have never played a Elder Scrolls game from launch. This is all normal.

And continuing to give them a free pass like it's normal is just stupid.

To be fair, a big chunk of that wait time has to do with Microsoft/Sony cert. I'm guessing why they didn't release the PC patch earlier was because they want the patches to be released at around the same time? In any case, this won't have much of an effect on me since my character is basically invincible regardless but I would be interested in hearing from Bethesda how exactly they managed to create a glitch like this.

#30 Posted by Commisar123 (1790 posts) -

Ouch, well I guess its not just an isolated case then and that is unfortunate

#31 Posted by upwarDBound (654 posts) -

I'm really not bothered by the game at all, low detail texture problem included. I'm too busy enjoying the game to be bothered by such trivial matters. These new post patch issues on the other hand...

#32 Posted by Lanceuppercut (127 posts) -

This sucks, I just got a house and was very excited for the patch. Now it looks like I'll be finding something else to occupy my gaming time.

#33 Posted by Vinny_Says (5681 posts) -

dayumm....I spent 80 hours S-ranking Skyrim off the disc. I was really looking forward to better load times.

#35 Posted by GaZZuM (443 posts) -

I think those dragons are simply choosing to fly backwards. HUGE AI improvement in the patch, good work Bethesda! Also, Atronachs?!?! What, you guys not get the Dremora Lord yet? Lulz

#36 Posted by Beforet (2911 posts) -

So all of this Frost Resistance I've been building up has been for null. Great, more space for my Improve One-Handed Enchantments.

That resistances thing is bullshit, but at least I don't use much magic

why i am waiting til all is fixed. idk that i even feel right purchasing this. it really isn't acceptable. if it was, then i would buy food from the same restaurant over and over even if they gave me half finished orders.

I see no problem with backwards dragons. They just discovered that their mouths can be a means of propulsion. I wonder how they avoid mountains...

#41 Posted by RecSpec (3753 posts) -

I wish I could run into one of these game-ruining bugs to give me an incentive to stop playing the damn game.

#42 Posted by SerHulse (685 posts) -

Well balls, there I am up to my eyeballs in magic and the resistance thereof, and this happens, great.

Oh well back to waiting for that patch to fix my problems.

#43 Posted by cap123 (2477 posts) -

awesome news! I have to wait til the 12th of december anyway!

#44 Edited by DoctorWelch (2774 posts) -

I think its hilarious how people are stupid enough to put up with this shit from this company. This kind of inexplicable brokenness that is always associated with Bethesda games is simply inexcusable, and the fact that they consistently ship fucked up games or patches that fuck games up even more is just pathetic.

#46 Posted by ScruffMoney (41 posts) -

It's a Bethesda game, you can't get rid of the glitches! Even the glitches have glitches! I know there was more than one occasion when I'd be attacked by an invincible bandit. Neither I nor a dragon could do any damage to the guy.

#48 Posted by Ben_H (3294 posts) -

Time to disable automatic patching on Steam so I can play the game without it being completely busted.

#49 Posted by akumous (90 posts) -

I find it comical reviewers still give this piece of shit of a game 10 scores despite the apparent bugs it has, any lesser game would have been bombarded and ridiculed. Yes the game is great as far as gaming goes but the technical quality is unacceptable. We're basically beta testers paying to play the Skyrim so Bethesda could find the bugs and patch since their understaffed and they need us to help them find the bugs.

Despite my views, I will buy this game but I'll only buy it at discounted price - the GOTY edition - and only then the major bugs will be ironed out.

#50 Posted by JacDG (2113 posts) -

I wonder how people would have reacted if these issues had been in a Call of Duty game, lol, sure the tone would have been a lot different.
