It's very poor. Not sure why so many people are quick to sing its praises, because it's an awful step in the wrong direction in my opinion. I'm playing on the PC, but played a couple hours with the controller to see if I'd prefer to play it that way (I did not), and even on the controller the menus were terribly frustrating. They are barely organised lists of words, and terribly slow to navigate. There's no quick way for me to sort through all my boots or helmets for example, without scouring through the entire apparel list, trying to pick out the names of the items I'm looking for, which is a complete pain in the ass when you might not necessarily know what items you have.
As for PC specific problems with the inventory: clicking on an item with the mouse sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't. Sometimes, regardless of which item you clicked on, the click is interpreted as clicking on the currently highlighted item - ie. the one that is highlighted by physically scrolling through the items with the keyboard, not the one I'm highlighting with my mouse. Sometimes, it just doesn't work at all, and sometimes you'll miss the item by a few millimetres and the menu will close.
The favourites menu is just another fucking list. And it's tiny, taking up barely a sixth of the available vertical space on my monitor, forcing me to scroll through all my shit if I have a decent number of favourite items.
Also, without the use of a mod (that thankfully already exists), there is no rhyme or reason to the keys you need to press to close and interact with different menus. One button opens the inventory, another button selects items, another button closes the inventory. If a modder can fix this with a simple file on day one, god only knows why Bethesda couldn't figure this crap out before the game was put on shelves.
