With all the major releases out, whats your have you had a chance to pick a GOTY? I have played Skyrim for about 8 hours and I can already tell its my personal game of the year.
Is Skyrim your pick for GOTY?
Though I have yet to play Uncharted 3 and Zelda, Skyrim is the only game that has really filled me with awe this year. Arkham City was the only game that really came close to matching my experience with Skyrim so far, and I won't be playing Arkham City three years down the road. Barring several game breaking bugs, Skyrim will probably be my GOTY.
It's the hands down winner with hardcore and critics from what i can see. It is definitely the front runner at this point as Uncharted and Zelda seem to have fallen flat while Batman is already being forgotten about (sadly). AC Revelations could surprise but if the current crop of sequels is any indication it is doomed to underwhelm as well.
So far Skyrim is the most exciting game experience I've had this year, so it's definitely on my list. Going to have to wait for the rest of the year's releases but I seriously can't see myself thinking more highly of a game than this one, except perhaps Bastion.
That game was absolutely fucking brilliant. Nothing short of a masterpiece. I'm surprised so many people have forgotten about it but I think it's by far the best game that came out this year so far and deservers the GotY more than any other game.
@Jack_Daniels: Arkham City is fantastic, but like it was discussed on the Bombcast, it doesn't have the wow factor like Arkham Asylum. Walking out of the introduction city in Skyrim into the forest is up there along with seeing Rapture in Bioshock and exiting the Vault in Fallout 3 as moments in gaming that have nearly taken my breath away.
This sounds like a very stupid thing to say. I'm not insulting the quality of the game; I'm just saying that you may wish to give it more than less than a day, especially since it's a huge RPG and everything.
I was thinking the exact same thing.
I think it is a bit too early for any of us to call anything GOTY. Skyrim hasn't even been out 24 hours yet, so I don't think I've had enough time with a game of that scale to say anything for sure. Then there are games like Skyward Sword and Saints Row: The Third that I haven't played yet. Skyrim is a contender, but it hasn't won.
I've got 3 games on my list Dark Souls, Battlefield 3, and Skyrim. Amazing titles.
My list is basically the same as yours. Dark souls which I had never played or heard of until its realase was such a nice suprise. BF3 Tons of enjoyment and have waited for a long time. Skyrim...... well its Skyrim what more do you want?
Well, I guess this can very well be my game of the year but put aside Uncharted 3 is also my game of the year when it comes to action adveneture games.
But yeah well.. I do favor RPG games a bit more than action adventure games and Skyrim is so damn good! Thank so much bethesda!
Portal 2, BF3, Skyrim. I think those three dudes will have to split the throne for me this year.
To make myself unpopular I thought The Witcher 2 had quite a few flaws. The difficulty curve (from impossible to trivial), quite enclosed areas and not as good plot as The Witcher 1. Still a great story, but I thought The Witcher 1 had some truly brilliant, genious, moments - for example the end of Act 1 or 2, in the village. Best RPG story-thing ever if you ask me, and 2 just didn't have the same thing. It was more clear and linear all along.
My heart belongs to Dark Souls!
Yeah, I seriously doubt it will surpass Dark Souls. But you never know, I only just picked it up from the store.
Meh. I loved Demon's Souls and I really loved Dark Souls in the beginning.
But after finishing the game and looking back it really had bad levels near the last third of the game and the invasion stuff was just frustrating
The Skyrim exprience is just way too inconsistent to make for GOTY imo. It has a lot of great stuff to offer but you can just as easily just get stuck in a rut. It gives the player just a tad too much freedom, to the point that you can easily go for hours and hours missing key features. But then again that's what's it's best part too so it's hard to judge it too hard for it. I'd say it's probably top 3 and definitely top 5.
Dunno about GOTY, especially in a banner year like this, but the fact that I like it at all is an achievement to behold. (I hated Oblivion, and fantasy in general bores me to death)
Then again, I'm sitting here twitching like an addict thinking about jumping back in. If that's not a sign of exceptional quality, I don't know what is.
I am only about 6 hours into skyrim so far but it seems like a strong contender at this point.
I haven't played many new releases this year yet though, it would probably be between gears 3, portal 2, and skyrim right now. (I haven't played a lot of big games yet like arkham city, uncharted 3, or forza)
Except for Witcher 2, I'd say yes. Although i haven't actually played Skyrim yet, getting my copy tomorrow morning, in about 12 hours. Still, I've seen enough game footage to know that it's a serious contender for that title.
I have played skyrim, however, and as good as it is (pretty dang good) witcher 2's still better.
