Juice or Spice?

#1 Edited by emem (1955 posts) -

This post was inspired by the "I will not buy Skyrim" thread. This is also a purely hypothetical thread, I don't have insider knowledge and I am no psychic.

It would be interesting to see what people had to say if The Elder Scrolls 6 came out and had only ONE stat left.. feel free to reply.

Oh and it would be called either "Juice" or "Spice".. take your pick.

Edit: I would even buy Skyrim if it had no stats at all.. as long as it's a good game.

This.

If by that you mean the RPG comes from the story, the world and the characters and the way you interact with the world.

Buying Skyrim even if the p.c was the soul of a unicorn and kills dragons by throwing fairies at it....BRING IT!  So dropping a few POINTLESS stats bothers me not.

I love insane amounts of stats and item management, if they cut a little out that is fine but they cant turn it into like Mass Effect 2, don't get my wrong I love ME2 but I don't come to elder scrolls games for dumbed down RPGS.

Stats are only numerical representations of physical and mental growth and could easily be eliminated all together. You could level up just be gaining new abilities and your defense and attack would increase based on the items you have. This would increase the immersion into the world thus enhancing the actual "role-playing".

For instance if I practice a technique in a martial art. I can be said to have learned it when I can do the technique through muscle memory, without thinking about it. I have "learned an ability". Or lets say I start with a 22 rifle, but get enough money to buy a AK47. My strength has just increased. The numbers in a game are unimportant. There are better ways to do it.

Numbers are still the best way we have of presenting that information to the player though. The issue isn't that they try and find a better way of communicating that information, it's that they typically tend to 'solve' it by just stripping out anything which requires the player to even have that information in the first place. Are you strong or weak? It doesn't matter anymore, because we're only gonna put you up against enemies you can easily beat anyway.

Not saying that's the case with Skyrim, but that's usually how it goes when developers start talking about 'streamlining'. They usually mean 'removing depth'.

I will never understand why David Lynch didn't like his movie, I love everything about it. The mini-series was crap though..

There will always be stats/numbers for games like Skyrim, the question is, if we will be able to see them. For exmple: Getting item upgrades is important and instead of telling you about how much better they are, by showing you numbers, they could just have colored items for each resilience and the better the item the bolder the color. And making the border of the items dashed could mean that it's a better or worse item than the one you're wearing. Of course that would really suck for colorblind people, hm. Maybe it's not such a good idea after all. ;p

Either way, stats are necessary, but not all of them have to be visible for it to work, imho.

Skyrim isn't really that lacking in stats. They've just removed/combined a few of the skills and cut the number of attributes in half.

#39 Posted by bioblood22 (420 posts) -

As for the stats they've removed, I have no problem with it, they were stupid stats anyway.
