Personally, I'm sort of torn about how I want to play my character. I played a mage in Oblivion, but her magic wasn't good enough and I had to turn her into a battlemage. Both my spells and my blade attacks were pretty weak, and it made the game hard to play. I kind of want to play as a Khajit or Dunmer rogue that buffs himself with spells, but I'm afraid that he'll also be too weak. Does this build idea sound good? Also, what character builds are everyone using/planning on using?

The fifth installment in Bethesda's Elder Scrolls franchise is set in the eponymous province of Skyrim, where the ancient threat of dragons, led by the sinister Alduin, is rising again to threaten all mortal races. Only the player, as the prophesied hero the Dovahkiin, can save the world from destruction.
Now that there aren't any defined classes, how will you play?
normally in rpgs i play a DPS rogue but the spells in this does look a hell of a lot better so im thinking of going for a full mage. on top of that to my understanding the status attacks are rather late game so i probably wont be able to do the roge type of build i would want anyway. in the end im buying the strategy guide and probably read it on the bus home so it will be a last minuet decision
I'm playing the same way I played Oblivion. A badass, stealthy archer who also happens to be a mage.

@BabyChooChoo: will you use swords or daggers for melee attacking? Is attack speed the only reason a person would use daggers over other blade weapons?
Generally daggers have a higher crit rate or a backstab type ability. I have no clue if this is the case in oblivion though.
@MikeHawk: It depends on the stats mostly. If I find a dagger that stuns, poisons, etc then I'd use that over most swords unless the sword in question also had similar effects. From what I remember though, I generally stuck with swords anyway because I didn't have to get in too close and I could do enough damage in a short amount of time. I'm not too picky over my melee weapons to be honest. In Oblivion, in a room full of enemies, I would one-shot a guy with a bow, summon a monster, and kill off the rest before they even got to me.

in skyrim there's a perk that boosts dagger attacks fifteen times more powerful if struck while you're sneaking/undetected. also daggers and bows are silent while other weapons are not. if that helps at all
Dual-wielding destruction user. Then, after I finish the main quest, I will focus on leveling everything. My long-term goal is to become a god.
Going with block, one-handed, restoration, archery, with minors in two-handed hammer, alchemy and smithing. Next roll will be pure mage with help from a build guide hopefully.

I was thinking going for an archer/mage. Is that a bad idea?
The game is set with the concept of no path chosen is wrong. I was level 4 and killed two giants with lightning and a bow. The archery has improved.

1 handed, destruction, healing. not decided what to do after :)
Pretty much this, maybe some conjuration.
After that a Khajit rogue/archer/ranger, then of course a Nord barbarian with a big two hander.
