    Updated

XBL: Update 1.6 is now available on Xbox 360. Aswell as the patch notes in here, the update will prepare the game for the first downloadable content called Dawnguard.

    Steam: Available.

PS3: Update 1.6 merged into the 1.7 update

    Original

The monthly (almost) updates for Skyrim are still in force. Last time we had Kinect enabled options (X360), and before that new kill animations was added in the 1.5 update. Now horse combat will come to Skyrim, and by now I mean right now, for the PC at least. If you want to check out the new feature right now be sure to opt into the beta program for the game. As with the previous updates, when the beta is done it will be released to Steam for all users and then sent to Microsoft and Sony for certification that may take another week. I will update it here when it's released.

    Source: http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1376244-details-on-upcoming-16-update-available-in-beta-on-steam/

Here's the patch notes for 1.6.

That's actually awesome, I thought that might be a good idea but I never thought they would go ahead and implement it.

For some reason I always thought that mounted combat was an announced feature for Skyrim way back when. Horses are made a lot more useless without it.

I'm honestly surprised they're actually patching in things that were in that video they put out.

    Horseback combat is great! Finally.

I'd have been happy if the wolves/bears would go for meat dropped from a horse. That always seemed like it should work.

I don't think we should be. A lot of that sizzle reel looked bloody marvelous, and it'd be a foolish waste not to implement at least most of it in either updates or DLC. I don't think they would've shown the video if they weren't going to release any of it.

I hope they've put some effort in it as I suspect it will be super glitchy. Traveling on horse is, don't want to imagine combat. Still, a good addition.

Wait, people used horses? They were so clunky and since getting in and out of combat in pinch situations was bad I never bothered! I am not sure this helps enough where I'm still inclined to just fast travel and walk.

Somehow I just saw it for the first time, but they need to implement every damn thing in that Jam video. I loved the water flow one.

I wonder what all is going to be in Dawnguard. Oh, and mounted combat is pretty cool. I liked riding horses across Skyrim, but combat was always annoying with it.

Edit: I'm looking forward to future updates, seeing that they've already included Kinect shouts, ranged kill-cams and this upcoming combat mechanic. Spell combinations would be sweet.

If they keep this up they might actually release most if not all of the cool features from the game jam video! Well, except for the ridiculous/goofy ones.

I wonder why they're doing this. They get nothing out of improving the game at this point. I wonder if these are new things they designed for the next game/expansion and they can patch it in to the last one easily. It's clear they aren't giving up their Radiant engine for all the gold in Casterly Rock. I suppose it gives them an advantage for when they're getting ready to release the next game and the new mechanics have had rigorous testing already.

Sadly the game's combat itself is too shitty for any patch to make me play again.

Don't get me wrong, Skyrim rocks, I've spent around 96 hours in it, but the combat that consists of rapist AI lunging at you from all directions trying to strip you down and fuck you in the ass where you stand is just unbearable and game breaking.

I was about to say, I fast-traveled everywhere, and where I didn't, I walked and took in the scenery and picked up flowers and plants. Horses are terrible. They don't let you move fast enough, and you skip out on the little things you might miss on your way to the destination. It's like the worst part of traveling.

I never rode a horse just because I had to get off to fight anything. Much rather just walk. If this mounted combat is implemented well it could be a major new feature, a real change in how I play the game. I might actually ride across country if I didn't have to dismount for every wolf or bandit that crossed my path.

In reply to my 13-hour-ago self ^ :
I was watching a bunch of Robbaz videos just now, including two Skyrim videos, and god damn do I miss exploring those towns as the Skyrim music plays and the NPCs around me say random shit.
I guess I will endure the terrible combat for 20 more hours as I do a bunch more quests and enjoy the new patch.

Maybe this'll fix the fact that I have two Louis Letrushes, that stand side by side outside their stable in Whiterun, yet one's body remains permanently half clipped underground. Honestly, I'm fine with keeping torso-only Lou Letrush, just get rid of the able bodied duplicate.

That's great. Have they implemented a horse call button yet? Whenever I would get separated from my horse for whatever reason, it was always a pain to find it as it wasn't on any map and there was no way for me to call the big guy.

I've long since run the two named horses off a cliff, so I don't think I'll be using this if I ever go back to Skyrim. I should probably check if they can come back.

@Marcsman: I hope so. I tried using the horse for like 5 hours recently, but it just kept getting in the way and agroing wolves. Unlike when Lydia dies, when my horse died I kinda went *shrug* and didn't reload.

I opted for the 1.6 beta and it's pretty stable! The hitboxes are really awkward, though. I thought Mount & Blade was hard -- but even when stationary it's hard to hit anything!
