 Answering fan questions on the subject, Howard said that there are "no current plans" for a fifth game in the Elder Scrolls series.

Eh, I'm sure they're thinking about something.  They say this kind of stuff all the time it really doesn't mean much.  They probably aren't really working on it yet, but I'd bet they are at very least tossing ideas around.

You guys forget that Bethesda work with id now? The next Elder Scrolls is going to be super crazy running on the id Tech 5 engine. ZeniMax is one smart ass company. For sure they're going to focus on something new, while they set plans ready for the next game.

#9 Posted by Druminator (1678 posts) -

That sucks, I fucking love Oblivion.

#10 Posted by pornstorestiffi (4923 posts) -
@Emilio:

Just cause Zenimax bought Bethesda, it doesn't mean that they will be migrating over to the id Tech 5 engine.

As for the topic, if this indeed turns out to be true, its really disappointing. Elder Scrolls has been one of those series you could just sink hours and hours into. And even though a game like Oblivion may have had small faults here and there, it was still a maser piece in my opinion.
#11 Posted by Emilio (3380 posts) -
@pornstorestiffi:

No, ZeniMax bought id. Bethesda was already a ZeniMax property. This means that ZeniMax, and Bethesda, now have access to their own Next-Gen game engine for practically free.

I'm way more interested in a new TES than anymore fallout stuff, or WET, to be honest. I'm probably not the only one. So the fact that they're not even (allegedly) planning right now is a little bit of a bummer.

#13 Posted by c1337us (5751 posts) -

I hope this isn't true. I would love another Elder Scrolls game.

Yeah sorry that should have said id not Bethesda, brain fart. But i still don´t think using their engine will be almost free, plus they need to learn coding for it too. I´m not saying that it would be bad if Bethesda would take use of the Tech 5 engine, cause the engine used in Oblivion and Fallout 3 seriously is in need of a upgrade.

What happened to all that stuff in 2008 about Bethesda saying that they saw Elder Scrolls V coming out some time in 2010? :(

#16 Posted by Cloneslayer (1633 posts) -

this sucks. at least he said its possible for an Elder Scrolls MMO

#20 Posted by MetalR (422 posts) -

Is this serious?

#21 Posted by Crixaliz (782 posts) -

Aww... but atleast they said it, rather than letting people keep wondering if they are working on it.

#22 Posted by Carlos1408 (1516 posts) -

OH man that sucks poop, but I'm sure eventually they'll be like you know what lets make another elder scrolls!!!
I doubt it's the end of elder scrolls, maybe there won't be one for a few years .... hmm i don't know, I did love the games though.
#23 Posted by Bubahula (2197 posts) -

this is the fucking worst news, i hope its a lie
#24 Posted by Potter9156 (942 posts) -

Good news, in my opinion. Because, come on, we all know TESV would have been Oblivion 2. I would like to see them continue expanding the lore through books and on their forums.

#25 Posted by ZombiePie (5685 posts) -

It's for the best. Bethesda has some capable developers, and it would be a shame if they were forever tied to a single game series and weren't allowed to pool their talents into an original IP.

So what are they working on instead? More Fallout?

#33 Posted by Crixaliz (782 posts) -
@HandsomeDead:

They outsourced Fallout to Bioware I believe
#34 Posted by BiffMcBlumpkin (3720 posts) -

There isn't a chance in Hell they're not making another TES game.

Bethesda shipped 1.7 million copies of TESIV (when it was only available on the 360 and PC) from Mar 20th 2006 (its release date) to Apr 10th 2006. By early 2007 it had sold over 3 million copies. Those are insane numbers.

TES is Bethesda's keystone franchise, without the reliable money it generates they could hardly fund additional projects or expand their development teams.

Maybe he's implying that there won't be a TES V anytime soon, meaning that IV's sequel won't be on any of the current generation platforms (and that wouldn't be too hard to imagine, that's how all of the previous entries have worked as well.) They're not anymore likely to stop making TES games than McDonald's is likely to stop selling burgers.

#35 Posted by Hailinel (24977 posts) -
@Crixaliz: Uh, no.  Not Bioware.  Fallout:  New Vegas is being handled by Obsidian, which is the company that made sequels to Bioware games like KOTOR2 and is working on their own game in Alpha Protocol.
#36 Posted by ArbitraryWater (11804 posts) -

Then what is Todd Howard's team working on? Fallout: New Vegas is being made by Obsidian, and it's not like Bethesda has any other significant IPs.

They pretty much said that the next one was an MMO, which makes perfect sense.. Who knows what will happen after that. I would play the MMO if it were anything like morrowind and less like Oblivion, Bethesda has my love whatever they decide to do.

Me want oblivion

#40 Posted by MatthewMeadows (588 posts) -

You misquoted the guy. They have not plans for THE ELDER SCROLLS 5. Could be a Morrowind/Oblivion sequal or an MMO.

Morrowind > Oblivion

I don't want to say Oblivion was "dumbed down" but they definitely simplified it massively to appeal to a wider audiance, and it lost a lot of what made the past Elder Scrolls games so great.

But I'm not overly disappointed that they aren't working on a 5th game, Oblivion did end the series quite nicely, and although they could obviously go back and revisit the universe, I'd prefer to see them working on something else.  Why is Halo the only series that gets bashed when it's announced they're releasing an expansion for one of the most popular games of all time, yet a 5th Elder Scrolls game, not counting spin-offs and expansions is what everyone wants?

I say give the series a rest.

That makes no sense.  I sequel to Morrowind or Oblivion would be the Elder Scrolls 5, even if they decided to go back and set the game in Vvardenfell again, it would still be the 5th game.  Are you suggesting they make an Elder Scrolls V:  Morrowind II?

And an high fantasy MMO is the last thing we need, even set in the Elder Scrolls universe, is it really necessary?  The Elder Scrolls was always supposed to be a single player experience, which is why they refused to include any form of multiplayer/co-op in Morrowind and Oblivion..  I have a hard time believing they'd go against everything the series was supposed to stand for, for the sake of making a few quick bucks.
#46 Posted by BirdkeeperDan (400 posts) -

No current plans isn't that suprising. I believe the next TES game will come during the next console iteration. Oblivion & Morrowind represented a graphical leap relative to both the previous TES game and games previously seen. That helped them attract interest outside of the games "reliable" audience. Nothing catches my eye like drastically improved graphics. They can't do that without improved hardware, so it won't be realeaed until the next console iteration.

If they were to release something this console iteration it would and should be an expansion pack.

Hopefully when they do make TESV they will create more small and medium size settlements instead of random dungeon 100 through 150.

Is that why they registered like 100 URLs relating to an Elder Scrolls MMO?
