The Elder Scrolls
The Elder Scrolls is a long-running franchise of role-playing games made by Bethesda Softworks. The series is known for offering much freedom to the player and many choices of how to play.
The Elder Scrolls goes Massive Multiplayer - Good or Bad?
I would rather see 5, but I appreciate that they are out to make money and MMO has to be the way to do it, I mean, why make your audience spend only one fee when you can make them spend 3 times that a year?
I agree with skrutop, looking at it now we should have seen this coming.
My personal reaction to this is that, well it was inevitable, but still very disappointing. You have to assume that the release of the MMO will divert resources away from a new single player Elder Scrolls; who knows when and if it will be released. I totally wanted the Elder Scrolls to remain single player, because I've always been a single player guy. I am extremely fond of the Elder Scrolls, especially Oblivion, and no question the game I was most looking forward to hearing about was Elder Scrolls 5. I can't help but be disappointed.
At the same time, though, I would totally play an Elder Scrolls MMO. I've never played an MMO before, although I've thought hard about getting into WoW and Warhammer before, but never pulled the trigger. But if the only way I could get my Elder Scrolls fix would be through this MMO, I'd still do that, definitely. Regardless of gameplay, I love the Elder Scrolls universe, with it's deep lore and rich and well developed history, and I love the aesthetic of the games as well. See, I'm part of the problem. Here I am flying the flag for single player games, and as soon as my favourite franchise goes online, I'm on the bandwagon. Goddammit.
It could be pretty cool, and I look forward to seeing how Bethesda translate the franchaise into an MMO.
That's a bad move. Not necessarily for us, but for them. The MMO market is currently over-saturated with decent games (and WoW of course) and with that KoToR MMO in the horizon, there are not many potential subscribers left.
" So, Elder Scrolls 5 is the MMO or is it another one seperate from ES5? If so, I'm disappointed... that's the second sequel I wanted that is now turning into a MMO. Bioware is treating ToR as if it's KOTOR3, and now Elder Scrolls 5 is an MMO... NOOOOOO "This is my thoughts excactly. I am ready for a new Elder Scrolls game but I don't play MMO's at all.
Bad. Very bad in my opinion. Anyone who has played Oblivion Co-op on PC through the hack knows it's not a very good experience. Multiplayer detracts from the fun. What makes the Elder Scroll's games stand out and so amazing is that they provide a vast, immersive, single player world, which is greatly enhanced and extended by the mods players make. Just look at all the crap people have done for Morrowind and are STILL doing for Morrowind. The players have completely transformed that game. You could never have something like that in an MMO. Beyond that the MMO market is so oversaturated at this point that it has turned in on itself and is actively cannibalizing its player base, because it hasn't innovated in 5 years and there are next to no new subscribers left thanks to WoW. If the game was a pure sandbox MMO I could see it being halfway descent, but we already have a first person Elder Scrolls style sandbox MMO. It's called Mortal Online and it's not that good.
" I chose don't mind cause I just goooo with the flooow maaan. Ya know? Like flow, and go, togettthherr? *Snifff* It's like cool and stuff. You can't change people maaan. If they wanna make it then that's what they're gonna do and stuff maann. Joint Ops bro. "Sniffing weed is a bad idea.
Bro.
Its a shame. Looking at stuff like Warcraft, I Think this means Elder Scrolls V isn''t gonna be coming in the next decade (because of Story reasons, etc.) Granted, if they make it First Person, a different twist on the fomula Migt be interesting. But Elder Scrolls is fun because its such a unique and exessible Style of RPG. Make it Massively Multiplayer, then I dont think The Universe is Strong enough to keep Players interested for years at a Time.
Also, this is supposed to be finished in 4 years???? It ussually takes them 5 years to make a SinglePlayer game!!!! Even if All goes faster because they Know the engine better, that amount of Time doesn't seem agreeable to Create A Quality Product.
Bad, i don't like MMORPG's. I like playing games i can finish, and with deeper story lines. No one i know who plays MMORPG's actually read the quests they are given, its just "accept" move on cash in, move on to next thing.
Whats the point of playing then, when you don't care about the story, but only when your going to level up next. It becomes more of a job in my mind than a potential fun game.
I wouldn't care because I don't play MMOs, but I want they to take the time making a single play Elder Scrolls V.
I went with Bad. I prefer the single-player experience for games that had their success in single-player experiences. Now if they continue making other types of non-MMO games based on the same franchise, then I'd be ok with that, but I guess they won't since they would greedily want everyone to join their uninteresting MMO.

"I like what they're doing with Old Republic. Although it's an MMO and certainly has multiplayer features, much of the story seems to focus on the single player, only meeting up with other players for key events, like large scale battles. I'm sure this will turn a lot of MMO players off, but it should bring in a different kind of audiance and it'll be interesting to see how the develop this..
But the Elder Scrolls was always supposed to show the significance of single player RPG's, and Bethesda stayed away from even incoporating multiplayer features. Making the next game a full blown MMO seems like a total contradiction. Although as long as it's being developed on the side, and isn't completely replacing Elder Scrolls V, I couldn't really care less.
Bad. I would rather they made TES V and be done with it. No need to enter into an already oversaturated market with yet another generic fantasy MMO.
Bad. Very bad. This was the one series I didn't want to see whored off as an MMO.
If this replaces V then I might have to kill someone.
" @pornstorestiffi said:Yeah, i must say that Old Republic looks interesting, and i like the fact that they focus on giving the individual player an experience that you could only find in a single player game. Plus i think its really awesome and extremely helpful that they record all the dialogue for the game." Bad, i don't like MMORPG's. I like playing games i can finish, and with deeper story lines.
