King of Fighters '94 is a 2D fighting game. Instead of each fight being a best-of-three between two fighters, teams of three compete against each other in single elimination rounds. Because of this format, the player can only select teams of three fighters, and not a single fighter, to play as. The teams are set, and characters cannot be mixed and matched to make custom teams. The order characters fight can be decided however.
The characters who are chosen to go first from each side fight against each other. The winner receives some health back (if needed) and goes on to fight the next person on the opposing team. This continues until one team is out of characters.

The King of Fighters '94 is the first game in the King of Fighters franchise. Teams of fighters from around the world compete against each other until only one team remains to fight the competition's organizer, Rugal.
