The King of Fighters Movie Will Be Silly, Bad, or Both

Apparently I blacked out the part of my memory devoted to the knowledge that someone was going to try to make a King of Fighters movie. But it started shooting back in November, and cast details were also available. Maggie Q (of Need for Speed Undercover fame) as Mai Shiranui? Let me be the last to say "that seems like an awful choice."

That seems like an awful choice. There, got that out of the way.

Caught this embedded clip on Kotaku, which contains some bits from the cast and crew on the movie:

"An adaptation of the popular arcade and console game series, KING OF FIGHTERS revolves around the pursuit of three artifacts that will grant their owner unlimited power over reality."
OK, right there, that sentence has more story in it than anything I really remember from the KOF series. When I think back to the games, all I can really remember is... uh... Orochi blood? And... something about NESTS? Oh, and Terry Bogard yelling "come on, come on!"

This clip also has the actresses that will be portraying Vice and Mature talking about their craft. I could go on and on about this, but really, the Internet is about creativity, and I think you shouldn't have any trouble writing your own material about this self-serious clip.

All I know is that if Heavy D! isn't in it, I'm out.

Well, as history's taught us, movie's based on video game fighters are always complete successes.

This exists? Wow.

#5 Edited by REDRUN (1410 posts) -

Yes, some Mai costume malfunction need to be in the film!

#6 Posted by AURON570 (1674 posts) -

i always thought king of fighters was one of those lesser fighting games..

#7 Posted by FLStyle (4728 posts) -

A lot of fight games on the big screen lately, where's the Tekken one?

#8 Posted by zityz (2360 posts) -

Who knows if it will be good or not, Fighting games into movies are probably the hardest to pull off.

#9 Posted by needforswede (492 posts) -

I really didn't think King of Fighters was that well-known outside of the gaming world to warrant a movie.  I was also unaware there was a story to any of it.

Prediction:  This won't be "more than just a videogame movie."  It'll probably just be a newer, more obscure Mortal Kombat Annihilation.  If it's that unintentionally funny, I may want to see it.

The lady who is playing Mature had the best description possible, "we have moves that work together and we fight everybody".

#11 Posted by ryanwho (12082 posts) -

What gives me hope here is they seem to be taking everything way too seriously so it could turn into a b movie classic.

#12 Posted by ScreamingFist (364 posts) -

Ok, while I am not too familiar with the KOF series, this looks like it is going to be horrible.  The premise sounds stupid, the producers are taking it way too seriously, and the actors look like d-bags.  Any time you try to apply a story to something that is devoid of one in the first place it is doomed to failure.  Watching that clip actually pissed me off a bit because of how idiotic it looks.  Ok, I feel better now. =)

this lady's last name is *yip* and she looks a lot like a fox ... she is also wearing a red scarf and/or APRON?!

I need some leaves and a riddle STAT!  where's funky student when you need him?!

I am one of the few that liked Legend of Chun--Li, but I don't know if a King of Fighters movie will work.

#16 Posted by TwoOneFive (9459 posts) -

might be cool, looks very stunt heavy and thats always a plus.

#17 Posted by Canberra (1065 posts) -

Why?

#18 Posted by LiveOrDie1212 (926 posts) -

can't wait for this movie to come out!!!  its gonna be awesome. its going to be waaay better than the DOA movie, or even SF:the Legen of Chun-Li

#19 Posted by pong (13 posts) -

Lol cool, Bernice Liu who's playing Vice is one of the more popular Hong Kong actresses in the TVB drama shows.

Bring on the sequel!

#21 Posted by Agent_Lost (899 posts) -

omg, noooooo. This is not good, seeing Vice & Mature just the kiss of death for me. Also Shizuru & Iori was like big no for me. They can even make a good KoF Anime, this movie as no hope to be any good.

#22 Posted by ZmillA (2272 posts) -

wow these comments have been way more positive then I expected...

#23 Posted by JJOR64 (19003 posts) -

Awesome, another crappy video game movie.

#24 Posted by LordAndrew (14426 posts) -

I think the story of the games revolve around a fighting tournament or something? I don't know. Maybe I'm confusing it with every other fighting game ever made.
This movie should not be happening.

WHY DOES EVERYONE SEEM TO WANT TO MAKE A JAPANESE ARCADE FIGHTING GAME INTO A MOVIE?! NONE HAVE WORKED SO FAR! JUST QUIT HOLLYWOOD!

#26 Posted by ArbitraryWater (11804 posts) -

I fully expect this to be on the same level as the recent Street Fighter movie, both in terms of tanking at the box office and having universal critical disdain. STOP MAKING MOVIES BASED ON FIGHTING GAMES! (or all games really, as TANG has proven)

#27 Posted by shakaz (42 posts) -

better make an anime, this will be crap.

#28 Posted by NinjaHunter (973 posts) -

What I don't understand is why they keep making movie's of fighting games? They don't really have the deepest stories.

#29 Edited by carlthenimrod (1594 posts) -

I don't get why, if they are set on making a movie on a fighting game, they don't just copy the shit out of Bloodsport. There is a fighting tournament and Jean-Claude Van Damne wants to win it so he does a split and punches some guy in the balls.

Roll credits. Done.

I think a fighting game film could work, in theory. It's been a while since I watched MK, but i seem to recal enjoying it - that could be a misslead youth thing though. DOA was good for perves and giggles...

There's nothing better then a well correographed fitghing scene between skilled fighters. Sadly I'm sure this film will lack both of those elements.

#31 Posted by addictedtopinescent (3645 posts) -

Will this be better then that legend of Chun-Li thing ?  .

. . .
#32 Posted by Undeadpool (4948 posts) -

Looks like the KoF movie will be following the Street Fighter movie formula: focus on ANYone but the actual protagonists of the game (in this case Kyo and Iori)

#33 Posted by JoelTGM (5596 posts) -

They're wasting their time.

#34 Posted by Chao (4 posts) -

At least we'll get more TANG content.

#35 Posted by hellspawn20003 (9 posts) -

if this movie doesn't have Terry Bogard in it then it's was pointless to even make it, because introducing him could lead into a fatal fury movie since Mai is already in this

#36 Posted by TheFreeMan (2712 posts) -

I want to hear someone scream "BUSTAH, WOOOOOLF!!!" at least once.

#37 Posted by Kou_Leifoh (1891 posts) -

What the FUCK man?! I thought SN fucking K would be the last video game company to have Hollywood do a King of Fighters movie.

#38 Posted by Rmack (1078 posts) -

I hate to be "that guy", but the whole Orochi saga is actually about three artifacts, so, at least they're on track there.

And another "that guy" comment: if you think KOF is a second-rate fighting game, you don't know jack about fighting games.

Yeah, I said it.

#39 Posted by Gambit (727 posts) -

if is doesn't have terry bogard and joe hagashi no thank you.

#40 Posted by Mechanized (327 posts) -

Is there any reason why Iori had BLACK hair? Like, not even a red highlight in there. Lame.

#41 Posted by Junpei (762 posts) -

I wonder if Mr Big makes an appearance?

#42 Posted by AlexDP (8 posts) -

It's funny that they're still thinking about releasing this and haven't yet cancelled it after seeing Street Fighter: Legend of Chun Li flop miserably....

#43 Posted by ZombiePie (5685 posts) -

This movie should have been animated....

a ok.

#45 Posted by Joey2683 (359 posts) -

I appreciate the serious attitudes about the dificultly of making a game based movie. But I won't be suprised if it fails.

#46 Posted by keyhunter (3207 posts) -

I'll bet it's worse than the anime based on it. Also Terry won't be in it for some reason.

#47 Posted by ahoodedfigure (4240 posts) -

I want GB to have its own setup for fighting game characters where you actually get to select profiles of characters like it was a character selection screen in-game.

Then: achieve Nirvana.

#48 Edited by VibratingDonkey (880 posts) -

The only things that matter in a movie like this is the cast and the choreography. The rest can suck as much balls as it wants to, but if the fights promise to be awesome I'm in.

See Tekken.

Capoeira guy from Tom yum goong, bald parkour dude from Banlieue 13, Shang Tsung, Gary Daniels, Cung Lee, ball-waving schoolgirl from Kill Bill, freaky albino dude from Hellboy II, and the girl who once played Girl #1 in The Bold and the Beautiful. How can this not be fantastic?

#49 Posted by dantebk (218 posts) -

Looking forward to seeing this on TANG!
