The Legend of Zelda
Nintendo's flagship fantasy action-adventure series created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka in 1985, the Zelda series is the source of many revolutionary gameplay conventions, and continues to be one of the most popular and critically acclaimed video game franchises of all time.
Best Zelda Game?
Original, II, A Link to the Past. I don't care what anyone says, Zelda II was a great game. OoT was a good game for the first playthrough, but it was tedious after that. Wind Waker was also an awesome game.
Kinda Fake Edit: Majora's Mask sucked hard, and Twilight Princess left bad taste in my mouth. I recently watched the trailer for Skyward Sword and was left unimpressed. Don't get me wrong, I'm a long time fan of the franchise. But after being burned by TP, I don't have any faith for the series.
Link to the past for me, but Wind Waker, Ocarina, Majora's and Awakening are great too.
Hell, all of them are, except for the obvious cdi ones.
A Link to the Pas, followed closely by Link's Awakening DX and Minish Cap.
*Past...
A Link to the Pasta
+
Hands down my favorite is The Wind Waker. For some reason Ocarina of Time isn't the end all be all zelda that it is for so many people, I liked Twilight Princess better than Ocarina. I'd also take the Oracle of Ages/Seasons games over A Link to the Past
Majora's Mask. Zelda is a wonderful series, none of the games are anything less than great, but Majora's Mask has always stood out to me. It is without a doubt my favorite. Link's Awakening is probably my second favorite.
The Windwaker's story was really well done and had a lot of charm to it, both of which were completely lacking in Twilight Princess. Link to the Past is a close second.
I'll admit that I haven't played Majora's Mask though.. I'm hoping to see it remade for the 3DS soon.
Majora's Mask. Which sounds super hipstery. But it easily the most original Zelda sequel. And originality is something I can't praise enough.

Gonna be controversial and say Twilight Princess
(This whole post needs to be prefaced with an admittance of one of my many crimes in gaming: I've never played Wind Waker. I own a copy, just haven't played it yet!)
I agree with you on this, controversial as the opinion might be. I need to replay Twilight Princess, though, to make sure I'm not making up everything I remember about that game.
@MatPaget: Majora's Mask: It's been awhile since I've played it, but the confusing nature of the game, along with having to revert back to nothing until you find your way was very off-setting. As for TP, it felt very uninspired as far as the main quest and temple design went. Twilight Princess probably only left a bad taste in my mouth because I played it on Wii. Had I played in on GC, my opinion may be different. I'm not trying to be a hater or discourage people from played these games, but as someone who as played since the beginning, they just didn't feel right. This is only opinion, of course.
My favorite is Majora's Mask. It's so different from the other games. In a close second is A Link to the Past.
In my opinion, out of the ones I've played to completion:
- Majora's Mask
- Link to the Past
- Link's Awakening (DX)
- Minish Cap
- Oracle of Ages
- Twilight Princess
- Ocarina of Time
- Oracle of Seasons
- Wind Waker
I have played the original, Zelda II and Four Swords also, but not to completion; thus, I did not include them for fairness. Based on what I played...
- the original would go after OoT (Damn save system wouldn't work for some reason, so I could never finish it)
- Zelda II would go at the bottom (Side-scrolling? The game was difficult as hell for my early-teen mind at the time)
- Four Swords goes below ZII (A multiplayer Zelda? WTF?)
Majora's Mask is the most successful in attacking its ambitions and its dungeons are EXCELLENT. That's why I think it's the best; its world is constantly moving (almost in a Deadly Premonition-y way) and, again, the dungeons are intuitive and yet still challenging (see: Ocarina of Time, where at best one is true.)
A Link To The Past is my second choice, though I've never completed even a single dungeon of the Dark World. That game is just awesome. I love Oracle of Ages/Seasons, but they both drop the ball about halfway through until their endings. Wind Waker would take my 3D Zelda title if it didn't ruin EVERYTHING with the Triforce Pieces collection towards the end of the game.
I am literally STUNNED that The Wind Waker is the most popular 3D Zelda title at the moment. Has the generation of gamers who actually use the internet really changed that drastically? I mean, I assume it's a generational thing and not a Giant Bomb community thing, though I suppose that's possible too.
It's not that I don't think Wind Waker should be the most popular 3D Zelda title; by all means, it deserves the spotlight. I don't think I've ever seen that before in my life, though.

You should check the Wind Waker thread and see the sentiments towards it.
