Vinny needs to go replay NOLF and NOLF2. Yes they are goofy, but they are not straight up goofball. I fucking hate the Austin Powers movies, and NOLF are some of my favorite games ever made. Since when did colors, globetrotting, gadgets and fake british accents go out of style Vinny? Tell me!

I hope to dear god Monolith revive NOLF at some point. Been playing Gotham City Impostors a lot lately, and that game proves just how damn good that studio can be when they loosen up a bit and have some fun.

I think Deus Ex, NOLF and XIII are all from that brief era of games where you could try weird, crazy spy stuff in a first-person shooter, and publishers would actually believe you when you told them people would buy it.

The closest thing recently is Alpha Protocol, which is like a weird combination of Deus Ex and Mass Effect that was interesting but tragically flawed, in terms of bugs and the fact that every gun other than the pistol is total garbage. And Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which is actually pretty alright.

I think publishers are generally just afraid of any FPS that isn't all action and explosions all the time, given that even Deus Ex: HR, which was both well made and a sequel, only did modest sales, compared to the big actiony Halos and Modern Warfares of today.

NOLF is my favorite game of all time, but I can totally see why he would say that. It's not that NOLF is exactly like Austin Powers, but it was a comedic 60's spy game, much like Austin Powers was a comedic tribute to 60's spy film.

On the simplest kind of description its very true to say its like Austin Powers. Once you get away from the initial its a goofy 60s spy bond spoof. Its not so much...most people drop Austin Powers into describing NOLF. So calm down.

It annoys me that I can't find a legitimate download site to buy these games again... which means I'm going to have to dig in my giant game pile to try to find them to play again (which I now feel a need for)...

Did someone say they're making an Austin Powers NOLF game?

Edit * Craig Hubbard, game designer of No One Lives Forever * context. I needed it.

Regarding comparisons between the game and the Austin Powers film series, Hubbard pointed out on several occasions that, unlike Austin Powers, No One Lives Forever is not a parody of the spy genre. Contrasting the source of the humor in the two series, Hubbard noted that "Sure, [NOLF is] campy and silly, but the underlying premise borders on apocalyptic. That dichotomy in tone results in a very different style of humor from a parody, where everything is in good fun and nobody, including the characters, takes anything very seriously."

I think if he has to point it out on several occasions, it's similar enough that it's cool to make that comparison. Whatever the case may be, I'll always side with Vinnie. Always.

Bah. I just hate the idea that NOLF is something like Duke Nukem where "that time has passed". It's such a dark sentiment about the whole industry if that's the case. Color, variety and a unique sense of humor? BAH, those days are over baby!

I like the weird up-in-arms state this community can get into when you mention a crew member by name. The coolest thing in town is to either viciously defend or viciously attack, or to use one to troll for the other. Why am I a dick again?

Fine, whatever, Vinny, Patrick, whoever, the argument that "the time has passed for NOLF" is what I'm protesting.

Man, I just picked up a copy of the first NOLF for PS2. Looks like modern games could use a hint from 2002 in how to make fascinating set pieces.
