A collection of games from Valve Corporation released for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the Orange Box delivers great gameplay variety at a very reasonable price. It contains five games, three of which are new: Half-Life 2, HL2 Episode 1, HL2 Episode 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2.
Overview
Valve's Orange Box delivers five separate titles for the price of one. Included in the compilation are Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. This generous move on Valve's part not only delivered three hotly anticipated new titles to established fans (HL2: Episode 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2), but made the previous Half-Life 2 and Episode 1 available for the first time on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as well. Half-Life 2 tells the continuing story of heroic scientist Gordon Freeman as he battles the invading forces of the Combine in an effort to free a dystopian future Earth from enslavement. It takes place in and around a mysterious city named "City 17", presumed to be somewhere in Eastern Europe. Portal is a comedic puzzle-based first person shooter that surprised many with the originality of its physics-based puzzles and quality of its writing and storytelling. Valve has confirmed that Portal will become a franchise. Team Fortress 2 is a deep team-and-class-oriented first-person shooter that uses a stylized, cartoon-like visual style reminiscent of Pixar's The Incredibles. TF2 was released as the sequel to Team Fortress Classic, which was originally a Quake mod which became popular in the '90s.Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2 tells the story of Gordon Freeman after the events in Half-Life. His journey ends in the Citadel, where he destroys the Reactor Core.Half-Life: Episode One
Half-Life 2: Episode One continues to tell the story of Gordon Freeman with his partner Alyx Vance, while they try to stop the Citadel from exploding.Half-Life: Episode Two
Half-Life 2: Episode Two continues to tell the story of both Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance as they continue their journey to destroying the Combine. This takes them out of City 17, and just in time to see the Citadel blow. Half-Life 2:Episode 2 was praised for bringing new non-linear levels to the series, in which the player could tackle a situation from any angle.Team Fortress 2
Team Fortress 2, is the successor to the original Team Fortress. It is a multiplayer only team based shooter and features 9 very different playable classes which all have different abilities. They are split into 3 different groups, Defense, Offense and Support.Characters:
Offence
Pyro
The default Pyro loadout gives you the Flamethrower, Shotgun, and Fire Axe. The Pyro has 175 HP. The Pyro Achievement pack allows for the Backburner (replaces the Flamethrower) which gives the player guaranteed critical hits when the player attacks their foes from behind but is not as powerful as the flametrower, Flare Gun(replaces Shotun)which is able to ignite foes at a distance but is not very useful in close range combat , and the Axtinguisher (replaces the Fire Axe) which gives the player guarenteed critcal hits but is weaker than the fire axe in regular situations .The Pyro is generally used as kamikaze class for low level players but there are many techniques that Pyros will learn through experience. Pyro are the best spy checkers because an enemy spy disguised as a friendly will immediately ignite giving his disguise away.Soldier
When playing as the soldier you carry a Rocket Launcher, a Shotgun and a Spade. The Soldier has 200 HP. Althogh an attack class the soldier is as good in defence as in attack making him perhaps the most versatile class although he does have a very slow movement speed. His rocket launcher is very good in close range for killing foes and in long range for taking down badly placed sentries. The rocket launcher can also be used to rocket jump. By aiming down and simultaneously jumping and firing a rocket will cause you to fly in the air. This can be used strategically to reach otherwise unreachable areas.Scout
When playing as the scout you carry a Scattergun (a very powerful close range shotgun), a Pistol and a Baseball bat. The scout has a mere 125HP. The scout makes up for this by having the ability to double jump, capture control points twice as fast as any other class and has a movement speed twice as fast as any other class. They are not used to attack enemies head on they are used to capture control points and capture the intelligence.Defence
Demoman
The black Scottish cyclops (as he refers to himself) carries a Grenade Launcher, a Sticky Bomb Launcher and a Bottle of Whiskey. The Demoman is a very versatile class. Using the physics of the game, his knowledge of the maps, and his anticipation of enemy movements, the Demoman must be smart and kill his enemies with the grenade launcher. The Sticky bomb is generally used to set traps on control point or behind walls as they can be stuck to any surface. More skilled players use sticky bomb to destroy sentries as 3 well placed sticky bombs can take down a level 3 sentry.Top tier players use sticky bombs in attack dy detonating them in midair or at the feet of their foes.
Heavy
When playing as the heavy you carry a Minigun (Natascha as the Heavy refers to), a Shotgun and Fists. The Heavy has a massive 300 Hp. This my seem unbalanced but the Heavy has the slowest movement speed and moves even slower when the minigun is wound up.. The Heavy makes a great Medic buddy as when he is overhealed as he has 450HP. The Heavy achievement pack was recently released adding three new weapons Sasha (replaces Natascha). It is less powerful than Sasha but it slows the foe which you hit by 25%. The Sandvich replaces the Shotgun. This is basically a healthpack, it gives the heavy 150Hp but it takes 4 valuable seconds to eat. The K.G.B. replaces the Fists. They are weaker than the Fists but once one punch is landed, for the next 5 seconds the Heavy has guaranteed critical hits on any weapon.Engineer
When playing as the engineer you carry a Shotgun, a Pistol, a Wrench and you also have the ability to build Sentry Guns, Teleporters and Dispensers. The Engineer has 125HP. The Engineers main job is to build Sentries , Dispensers and Teleporters. Dispensers are vital, they give out health and ammunition. Sentry Guns are used to defend areas . Sentry Guns have 3 levels, 1st level is weak and only shoots similar to a pistol, 2nd level shoots similar to a machine gun and 3rd level also shoots like a machine gun but also shoots rockets. Teleporters are vital especially on Attack/Defend maps like Dustbowl. Many low level engineers don't understand the importance of teleporters but skill engineers realise the importance of teleporters if you want your team to succeed.Support
Medic
The medic's starting loadout lets you carry a Syringe Gun, a Medigun, and a Bonesaw. However, the Medic achievement pack allows for three new weapons, which are the Blutsauger (replaces Syringe Gun) which gives you 3HP for every needle landed, Kritzkrieg (replaces Medigun) which instead of ubercharging it guarantees the player you are healing to have critical hits, and the Ubersaw (replaces the Bonesaw) This is slightly weaker than the bonesaw but it fills the ubercharge bar 25% for every hit landed. The Medic has 150HP. The Medic's job is to heal is teamates using his medigun. He can also overheal his teamates so they have 150% their original HP for a short period of time. The Medic also has an ubercahrge which slowly fills as you heal teamate. When this bar fills you and the teamate you are healing become invincible.Sniper
When playing as the sniper you carry a Sniper Rifle, a Sub Machine Gun and a Kukri (a heavy Nepalese knife).Sniper has 125Hp. Headshots triple the amount of damage done compared to a bodyshot. Once zoomed a bar will start filling. After about 4 seconds the bar fills and you have a guaranteed critical hit. The sniper is very effective against slow moving enemies like the Soldier or Heavy. The SMG is probably the weakest weapon in the game and is rarely used. The Kukri is surprisingly useful as it it has an impressive range.
Spy
When playing as the spy you carry a Revolver, an Electro Sapper (destroys buildings built by enemy engineers), a Butterfly Knife, and a Disguise Kit (Used in disguising yourself as another player class). The Spy has 125Hp. The Spy has the ability to become invisable for about ten seconds. The Spy is unable to attack while invisible. The Spy may seem like a very weak class but he has a special ability. He gets an instant kill if he stabs someone in the back. The backstab causes your disguise to disappear. The electro sapper is also extremely useful. it attaches to an enemy engineer building and slowly drains energy from the building. It takes about 7 seconds to destroy an enemy building. An Engineer can knock off an electro sapper with two hits off a wrench. The disguise kiit lets you pick a member of the enemy team to replicate.Portal
Portal is a revolutionary FPS that had you instead of shooting a gun, operating a portal gun. 2 portals could be created, one blue, one orange, and each could be activated by the different triggers. You are a test subject at a company called Aperture Science where a rogue AI robot named GLaDOS guides you through 19 different test chambers with the promise of cake at the end. There are also 6 different "advanced" test chambers which are more difficult. The credits of this game are well-known for the credits song, Still Alive. Portal: Still Alive is a re-release on Xbox Live Arcade with additional levels and challenges.Peggle Extreme: Trial Version
The PC version of The Orange Box is also packaged with a trial version of the casual game, Peggle Extreme: Deluxe.Xbox 360 Game Installation
