One of the pillars of the Point-and-Click Adventure genre 0

The game has one of the best humors I've ever seen in a video game, lots of good jokes with good dialogue between the characters. This is probably the older game that I can think of that made the writting caught my attention. I'm in the minority that likes the second one better, but this is a nice introduction to a pretty nice story. The reason it doesn't get a 5/5 from me is the slow start, specially with the fights to learn the trash talks, it was not a good pace for an first impression in my ...

Hating Secret of Monkey Island is like hating having a good time. 1

It’s possible to not like The Secret Monkey Island. It’s also possible to not like good things in general. I’ve always wondered what makes old games age well. What tangible component that a game could have, mechanically or from a presentation standpoint that allows a gamer to pick up a game, ten, or in this case twenty years later and still enjoy it. My conclusion is that it’s a combination of things, entirely dependent of the game and in many cases the time period that the game was made. The ...

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition 0

The Special Edition of the original Monkey Island isn't a perfect upgrade, but it's a very accessible one that adds full voice acting, redone music, revamped graphics that are mostly quite attractive, and a robust hint system that helpfully nudges you in the right direction before it hits you over the head with the solution. I've only ever played a few minutes of the original game, so this was a nice way to experience a classic adventure in a friendlier way.The game itself holds up for t...

A Classic LucasArts Adventure Still Mostly Holds Up 0

The LucasArts classic adventure game The Secret of Monkey Island has weathered the test of time better than most other adventure games of its era. LOOM, Day of the Tentacle, and their contemporaries have not seen modern reproductions, and their influence remains less represented than The Secret of Monkey Island, a game which receives most of the credit for the classic SCUMM-engine adventure games that came before Myst. It's pleasant to say, then, that the game is still also a treat to play. The m...

Getting funky like a monkey 0

I quickly found myself relating to Guybrush Threepwood’s voyage into the mysterious and deadly . I was also venturing to a strange and foreign land, that being the forsaken territory of the point and click adventure genre. I’ve always preferred the dry lands of the consoles over the PC’s treacherous waters and torrential system requirements. So this review for Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition may come off as a bit naïve, like I’m way out of my league by trying to review this mystical s...

    Look behind you, a three-headed monkey! 0

Struggling through memory laneMonkey Island was one of the first adventure games I played, back in the days of yonder when I barely spoke English. Some puzzles I still remembered, some puzzles I was flabbergasted I was able to complete back then, especially as it was pretty much before the times of Internet walk-throughs. The additions of the Special Edition is great, adding voice acting for every single line of dialogue and giving us an HD graphic update with a suitable cartoonish style. I only...

Arragh! Monkey Island deserves a special edition! 0

About 20 years ago, Lucasarts released a game that would live forever as a classic and amazingly it wasn’t Star Wars related. It was, of course, The Secret of Monkey Island, the game that first introduced us to Guybrush Threepwood, Le Chuck and the chicken with a pulley in the middle. Recently, Lucasarts looked up from their shameless franchise destruction to produce a new and improved version of Monkey Island, entitled The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition. So whats changed an...

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition review 0

Behind the glossy veneer of this update lies the same classic but dated adventure. The Secret of Monkey Island is one of the undisputed classics of the adventure gaming genre. It holds fond memories for a huge number of people, and pretty much served as the template for all the Lucasarts (and similarly-styled) adventures that followed. Now, 19 years after the original release, comes the biggest update the game has ever seen; redrawn graphics, voice acting and redone music all make the game a lot ...

20 years on, still just as good 0

As a child I loved the Monkey island series, their humour and story always kept me coming back from more and I subsequently played through all four instalments. So naturally I was very interested in the 2009 revamp of the first in the series “The Secret of Monkey Island” and I am happy to say, it is excellent.     You play as the young Guybrush Threepwood who aspires to become a swash buckling pirate. The game is told in parts much like a book has chapters, the first starts with Guybrush on me...

    Rediscovered treasure 0

The Secret of Monkey Island marks the beginning of a distinguished adventure franchise held in high regard, and this Special Edition for the Xbox Live Arcade does nothing to tarnish that reputation. This is the same game that chronicles Guybrush Threepwood’s quest to become a mighty pirate and defeat the ghost pirate LeChuck with a new coat of paint.  Head in the sand  The new visuals are sleek and stylish; they aren’t mind-blowing compared to other arcade offerings, but they fit with the weir...

Van Redd Reviews: The Secret of Monkey Island 0

veryone ready for a trip through the wayback machine? I recently finished the new version of the classic Lucasarts adventure game The Secret of Monkey Island. It is a old school point and click kind of game from the early 90s. The Monkey Island series is renowned as one of the best, if not THE best, series of this type to ever come along. I was not a computer owner at the time they were popular and now I get to see what I have been missing.Secret is the first in the series and it sets up our ma...

Dominic Armato continues to kill my childhood (XBLM version) 0

Do old school adventure games deserve the imminent come back being promised by Lucas Arts?  Definitely, but unfortunately The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition is probably not the best poster child for this comeback.  This new version updates the original with new animation and music but fails to deliver with its voice acting. The problems begin with the lead character Gybrush Threepwood, voiced by Dominic Armato.  If you have been a fan of his work in the other recent monkey island install...

So you want to be a pirate, eh? You look more like a flooring ins 0

It might be hard to grasp but back in the ’90s LucasArts were at the forefront of the adventure game genre. They may not have always received the commercial success they deserved, but critically, and amongst fans, LucasArts created some of the greatest games to ever grace the genre. The puzzles were inventive, challenging and quirky, and the writing was of another level; hilarious, witty and with plenty of heart and honesty. There was rarely a negative aspect leveled at the classic point and cli...

    Refreshingly fun 0

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition is a fairly clever adventure game that starts out strong and never really lets up.  I missed the original game when it first came out and I was very excited to try this one out when the remake was released. The game looks very sharp and the art style is very clean and realized.  The Humor is pretty good, and that is a real compliment because humor in video games has been very hard to achieve.  The game as a whole really knows what it is trying to do a...

Great remake of a great game. 1

I loved the original game back when I played it, and it was very cool to get to replay through it again.  The ability to switch back to the old graphics is very fun to mess around with.  What more can be said?  It is an exact remake of one of the best adventure games around, so it is hard to review.  The new additions of art and voice acting add plenty of life to the game.  Definitely worth the 10 bucks to download....

There should be no point in writing this review becauseYou should have already played this gameIf you haven't, there's absolutely no talking to youBut I'll go on with it anyway so in that unusual case you really haven't played it, I can give you some good reasons to grab a copy from one of your friends or - for all those 15-year-old fps-players - from your dad or buy it on eBay (Try to get the FM-Towns version). In "The Secret of Monkey Island" you play Guybrush Threepwood a wannabe pirate who ju...

Do the Monkey with me! 0

Monkey Island is one of those franchises that I remember playing way back in primary school. I used to ride my bike over to my mates place just to play adventure games like Monkey Island, Space Quest, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, among others. The news of a remake of the original classic The Secret of Monkey Island was cause for celebration, even though it turns out this remake isn't so much of a remake as it is a spit and polish. The Secret of Monkey Island is a classic Lucasarts adve...

    Bare systems jutting out 0

Was there some sort of mandate in the early 90s that made every adventure game come automatically with some kind of boring grind area? This game is really cool and sometimes pretty funny, but almost everything surrounding the insult swordfighting sucks bad. It’s a problem that you can see later as well, at the point in the game where you have to haggle over a used ship, picking certain dialogue options to drive the price down. Like the insult swordfighting, it’s an interesting idea, but either t...

The Secret Of Monkey Island SE: Yes You Can Have Your Cake And Ea 0

Introduction: The Secret Of Monkey Island is pretty much the Monty Python of video games.Revered, memorised and quoted ad nauseam...by  those who were  old enough to enjoy it at the time of it's original release in 1991. I was two in 1991 and to steal a line from Jeremy Clarkson, my main concern was probably biscuits.  For years I have been hearing about this fabled treaure trove of wit and puzzles. However I have never ever seen a Monkey Island game available to buy in a shop..N-E-V-E-R. So I put...

    I can't believe I never played this 0

It's a terrible tragedy that I never played this game before. Really, at 37 I'm certainly old enough, and I've been playing games since my Apple IIC days in 6th grade, so there's no good excuse. I chalk it up to a traumatic King's Quest experience, the less said about, the better...All I need and want to say is that this game has left me laughing out loud on multiple occasions. Games just don't have that effect on me very often, but the clever, weird, and often unexpected (meaning coming from un...

The Great Adventure Game Franchise of all Time( 1 of 3 ) 0

Secret of Monkey Island has to be the pinnacle of adventure games during the Golden Era of video games. As games built on the Scumm Engine this probably what fueled the critical success of the LucasArts games division during the early 90's. Ron Gilbert has created one of the most immersive humorous and enjoyable pirate(if not stories period) stories of all time. Guybrush Threepwood is a lovable Pirate Wannabe that instantly grabs your attention and sympathy as you pilot him through beautiful ill...
