The game has one of the best humors I've ever seen in a video game, lots of good jokes with good dialogue between the characters. This is probably the older game that I can think of that made the writting caught my attention. I'm in the minority that likes the second one better, but this is a nice introduction to a pretty nice story. Hating Secret of Monkey Island is like hating having a good time. 1
It’s possible to not like The Secret Monkey Island. It’s also possible to not like good things in general. I’ve always wondered what makes old games age well. What tangible component that a game could have, mechanically or from a presentation standpoint that allows a gamer to pick up a game, ten, or in this case twenty years later and still enjoy it. The Special Edition of the original Monkey Island isn't a perfect upgrade, but it's a very accessible one that adds full voice acting, redone music, revamped graphics that are mostly quite attractive, and a robust hint system that helpfully nudges you in the right direction before it hits you over the head with the solution. I quickly found myself relating to Guybrush Threepwood’s voyage into the mysterious and deadly . I was also venturing to a strange and foreign land, that being the forsaken territory of the point and click adventure genre. As a child I loved the Monkey island series, their humour and story always kept me coming back from more and I subsequently played through all four instalments. Great remake of a great game. 1
I loved the original game back when I played it, and it was very cool to get to replay through it again. The ability to switch back to the old graphics is very fun to mess around with. What more can be said? It is an exact remake of one of the best adventure games around, so it is hard to review. The new additions of art and voice acting add plenty of life to the game. Definitely worth the 10 bucks to download....
