Unlike Funcoms other MMOs, The Secret World won't have any classes or levels. This way, Funcom says, there won't be any level grinding, and new players will enter the world more easily. The player's character will be highly customizable, and you can choose any weapon possible, from a sword to magic spells.
The game will be kind to those MMO players who like to play alone, as most tasks do not require you to team up or party with other players. Missions will be range from investigation to sabotage and hunting. The game will also be very story-driven, something that's not usual in most MMOs.
Players will take the role of a modern-day hero, whom they can customize to an unrestricted extent with limitless combinations of clothing, where they'll select the kind of missions they'll want to embark on. Whether they want to kill monsters, discover the secrets behind the secret societies in the world, sabotage lairs, or embark on bounty hunts is all their choice.
The most modern of situations can turn into a disaster with monsters lurking the streets.

"A friend" vandalized the forum, trying to remove information about how some users found a website called Sanctuary of Secrets. Aveline Belmont also has some codes to crack and wants the users to crack a code that she believes will give her some information about her family.
Users who has managed to solve any of the riddles mentioned has received a code. This code is believed to be for an upcoming beta-test for the game.

Setting
The game will be set in both the real world and a world that is similar to the real world, but it incorporates ancient mythology, urban legends and pop culture. The games director, Ragnar Tørnquist, identifies the world as a dark fantasy world and mentions vampires, demons and zombies. Players will be able to travel between different locations like London, New York, Egypt and even time travel is possible in this world. All NPCs will have voices, and Tørnquist has stated that they are using more than 100 voice-actors.
Factions
On the official site for the game you can take a test that will decide which of the three factions you fit in. There is currently no information how factions will work in the game. The factions are:Dragon: Ancient, spiritual and philosophical. Their logo resembles a chinese dragon head.

Trailers
The first trailer for this game was released the April 7.09, and another during PAX09, September 5.09. There's going to be released at least one more trailer before the game is released. The trailers can be seen at official site.Marketing
Funcom gave out the first chunk of information the April 7, 2009. However, before that, members of the game's forum had participated in an alternate-reality game. Several members of the community were emailed by a person named Aveline Belmont, asking for their help. But there were several sides in this conflict. Some users were contacted by somebody called "A friend". He tricked the users to find out where Aveline Belmont was located.
