Hey everyone. I don't know a hell of a lot about PC specs, but I just bought my girlfriend The Sims Complete Collection for Windows. I have a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop and we're having trouble getting the game to run properly. The install went perfectly well and everything seemed to be going okay until we actually booted up the game. Basically, what happens is we get the sound effects from the EA logo cutscene at the start of the game. There's no visual except a black screen and after that nothing else happens. On the third or fourth time we tried I decided to go online and look for help so I pressed the Start key to get back to my desktop. Once I restored the game from the Taskbar, it worked again...at least until I clicked the "Create a Sim" button when my cursor disappeared.

So in summary, I get a black screen indefinitely until I press the Start key then reopen the window and I have no idea what to do about the cursor disappearing.

I checked the specs as well as I could but I'm definitely not PC savvy when it comes to gaming. What I do know is that the game requires about 180MB of RAM and I have like 898 or something, so that doesn't seem to be the problem. If you know of anything that could help, please let me know! Thanks.

Ive just looked up your laptop, and i think its probably this.
There are two versions of this laptop,  one has a nice nVidia graphics chip,  while the other does not.

If your has the chip it should work,
but if it doesnt then you will really stuggle to get the game running.

to cheak,

In XP
just right click on your desktop and click proporties,  got to the settings tab:

in Vista
just right click on your desktop and click proporties, select the bottom option 'display settings'

if it list an nvidia graphics card then the problem is summot else,   but if it lists an intel chip then thats your problem

hope this helps.

I definitely don't have a Nvidia chip. Thanks for researching it though.

his laptop only has 2 variants,  if he doesnt have the nvidia like he says then its the intel chip,  which means it wont play.

I really hope you get this message.  I saw that you posted 3 weeks ago.  I normally do not reply to post but I felt compelled.  I experienced the exact same problem.  I searched the web and there is not a single solution to the problem but in reality the solution is simple and overlooked.  I stumbled upon a readme file that comes with the game.

Basically, the intro movie freezes and you have to minimize the window and then maximize it in order to play.  This however creates mouse disappearing problems.  The solution is as follows.

Keep in mind that I play the game in the higher resolution mode.  If you do not like to play in this resolution or the game is choppy in this resolution, my same solution applies however, remove "-r1024x768" from the command line.

Okay, So first right click on This SIms shortcut icon (this can either be the icon on your desktop or from the start menu) then left click "properties" in the drag down menu.  Go to the "Shortcut" tab.  In the box titled "Target" type.  (Follow exactly what I type below, quotations and all).

"C:\Program Files\Maxis\The Sims\Sims.exe" -r1024x768 -skip_intro

if you want the lower resolution (as i stated above) type

"C:\Program Files\Maxis\The Sims\Sims.exe" -skip_intro

Click "OK"  Start the game using the icon you just edited.  The intro movie should be skipped (no minimizing/maximizing necessary) and the mouse cursor shouldn't disappear until you minimize the game for some reason.

May you always have the glorous lives of the sims and remember to treat you girlfriend well (a happy girlfriend = a happy you).  Also, sorry for such a long post.  I hope it helps.
