Insane Difficulty Revealed

@valrog:  Isn't that like Hardcore modes in games like Diablo and Torchlight?  If so, that's cool.  Now crazy people can play this game too.
#3 Posted by valrog (3671 posts) -
@SlowHands:  Yes. But those games are... Well, dungeon crawlers, and this is an RPG. So I would imagine this being A LOT harder. It mentions Demon's Souls in the article, I haven't played it myself (yet), but I hear it was brutal (in a good way). Either way, my guess is this will be quite an accomplishment.

Exactly what I thought.

Not insane enough.

#6 Posted by Undeadpool (4948 posts) -

That's actually a misconception about Demon's Souls. When you died, if you could  make it back to the place you died without dying again, you got all your XP back.

If you die your computer explodes, and you mother gets aids.
#10 Posted by TaliciaDragonsong (8699 posts) -

I like it.
I won't be using it but its good to see dev's offer some crazy options because you know this will just inspire someone to actually finish the game on insanity, naked, without potions.

It doesn't say. Now that I think about it... I wonder how they will construct the "sudden end". Surely it won't just throw you in the main menu screen...

So I guess this means I'll use slightly more potions as I spam the fire magic.

God, this.
I think I died a couple times on the fire dog boss, and then once I figured him out I never died once in the first Witcher. Every other spell was a joke compared to the fire magic. Upgraded to full it just murdered everything. The last few bosses were especially hilarious.

Yeah! And without weapons. Just bare fists.

You know what this really means?  There will be like a 25 point achievement for finishing it on insane when it comes to the 360.

deletes your save and character and forces you to start again each time you die

I can't even tell if this is satirical or not.

But.. It (kind of) already does that...

I think they should take it a step further that you not only lose your character but they also send someone to your door to kick you in the balls.  Only then will true masochists be happy.

#20 Posted by MaFoLu (1858 posts) -

The game should uninstall itself and the disc should self-destruct, or if you don't have a disc, your hard drive would explode...
Also, it should empty your bank account.
Anything other than that is not insane enough for me!

"You can save the game, but when you die the saves are disabled,"...   "Of course we plan to have a resurrection scroll, maybe DLC or something. You'll see."

It all comes off like lame PR to me.

Why are you so sure it's coming to the 360?
#23 Posted by luce (4045 posts) -

Honestly I'm still a little baffled when people refer to Demon's Souls as being one of the most difficult games ever.

It was a little unforgiving and required cautious playing but It was not that hard at all.

#24 Posted by endaround (2146 posts) -
@valrog: I'm not though they've talked about it before.  I just want to hear the gnashing of teeth of people trying to max out the score

Wrong.  A 24 point achievement.  Just to drive people insane when they no longer have an gamerscore that ends in either 0 or 5.
#26 Posted by Diamond (8634 posts) -

It's cool that the idea was inspired by Demon's Souls.  If Witcher 2's controls are more like Demon's Souls I may be able to enjoy it.  I also appreciate it when developers actually play games (you'd think that'd be a requirement for making games, but not all of them do it).

#27 Posted by KaosAngel (13765 posts) -

...can the 360 even run this game?  How would the choices in Witcher 1 even work?

#28 Posted by ryanwho (12082 posts) -

I like when modern developers get their revolutionary ideas from arcade games from the 70s.

I think it depends on what you're doing, really. Why would a Soundtrack Composer play games? But yeah, it just feels awesome when you hear devs talking about games they've played.

@KaosAngel said:

Probably not, there would have to be a lot of tweaking involved. It is said in the article that people without The Witcher saves will be able to choose morality choices before the beginning of the second game. As for the choices themselves, this will affect the 3 possible beginnings, life or death of some important characters in the first game, basically, and I'm sure there's a lot of things that will be changed. Basically, this would give infinite replay value with 3 beginnings (or is it 4? Not sure.) and 16 different endings. Not to mention the endings from the first Witcher, so...

If you die, your flesh begins to fall off, your girlfriend is raped before your eyes and then killed, you have your fingernails and toenails pulled off, your mother spontaneously combusts, dead or alive, a hurricane destroys your house and then bums come and pillage the remainders, you become a homeless leper, you are spit on by strangers in the street, your dog is kicked, you are forced to suck dicks for a living, you become addicted to heroin and get your arm chopped off and are forced to commit obscene sexual acts with one arm, you are picked up in a tornado and flung into the far reaches of Africa, you are eaten and shit out by a lion, and then buttraped by an elephant, before finally dying and being eaten by starving african children.

If you beat the game without dying, you get a 5 point achievement!

#31 Posted by Oldirtybearon (4825 posts) -

That's uh... well, good luck with that.

As an aside, has anyone heard a peep about the status of the 360/PS3 port? I remember hearing that it was going to be multi-platform in a dev press release.

#32 Posted by valrog (3671 posts) -
@KingWilly:  They said that they want to make it for consoles. Nothing is certain. After all, I hope they finish Rise of the White Wolf first.

I don't see why it wouldn't be able to run on consoles, the game looks great, but not completely unbelievable and the minimum specs for the game are very low.

Also, they have said a console version will be coming..  Just later down the road.  The only reason they didn't finish Rise of the White Wolf was because it was running on a new engine, essentially a completely different game.  And since they were already working on the Wicther 2, they just decided it wasn't worth doing.  The only question will be what happens with the choices you made..  But ME2 is getting around that on the PS3 just fine and they haven't even said how the whole transfer system will work yet or what will be transferred.
#34 Posted by ryanwho (12082 posts) -

Witcher choices don't really matter. You're on a new quest and probably you will not be going back to anywhere from the first game. So it doesn't matter if you helped the humans or the elves or if you managed to keep the other Witcher alive (is that even possible?)

#35 Posted by Bollard (5598 posts) -

So... I don't understand why everyone is really hyped for this game - should I play the first one? Or at least bother to look some stuff up about this one? I just feel like I'm missing out on a good game here.

But they do matter. Everything Geralt did matters.

You should definitely play the first one. And yes, you're missing out on an amazing game.
Note: Some people complained that the beginning is slow, so don't give up too soon. In the end, it's more than worth it.

During the explosion, radiation targets your junk which then sterilizes you. Obviously if you can't beat it on insane, you shouldn't be allowed to procreate.

@valrog: I should have phrased differently. When I say nothing he did mattered, I mean in the long term context. He's a traveling mercenary and you can make him do good and bad things but his mercenary personality essentially shines through regardless and you reach the same ending regardless.
and my hunch is he'll enter a whole other part of the world for that so they don't have to account for the king and his daughter, or who you helped, or who you fucked, or who you fucked over. On the other hand, maybe its unfair for me to assume they're as lazy as a certain Canadian developer when it comes to accounting for choices.
#40 Edited by valrog (3671 posts) -
@ryanwho:  I see your point. As Geralt would say, "We'll see."

Anyway, it makes me wonder what prevents someone to reload when he sees that he's going to lose that battle... Unless they disable the load game function when in combat, then this won't be half insane. How did Demon's Souls solve it?

Do I get Insane-Porn Cards for that?

The sex cards are not returning. At all. There will be cutscenes instead.

You know as much as I love The Witcher - I pass - I hardly have fun torturing myself with uber-hard game modes, Normal for me.

#45 Posted by amir90 (2156 posts) -

I don't mind it, hard was not that hard in witcher 1, especially when you were able to exploit certain spells.
I am always in favor of more difficulties :)
