Like, I get why he would have a silver sword, because the monsters in that universe are weak to silver and having a blade made out of it would just kill things better. But, why does he also rock a regular sword? I mean, a sharp sword is a sharp sword. Is there any reason in the fiction why using a silver sword on just a regular guy would be a bad idea?

I'm guessing that Silver is not as hard as steel and therefore would be non-effective against enemies with strong steel armour on.

    I am guessing on that.

Steel is stronger than silver and would hold up better against repeated strikes against armor/sword clashing.

According to the Witcher wiki in the novels Geralt explains that steel swords are much more resilient than silver swords. Silver swords would be ruined quickly if they were used to attack armored opponents or block incoming sword attacks.

Think of it like this: a steel or iron sword is used for regular man-to-man fights. That same sword is hitting shields, armor, and other people's swords as well. If i was a Witcher, I would want my silver sword to be kept sharp and light while my other sword a little tougher for hard-hitting attacks against dudes with armor and weapons.

In the end, half of a Witcher's work is in preparing for any contingency whether its man or monster.

Hey man, I didn't know. It's a fantasy world with magic. They could just as easily made up some weird reason and say silver is the strongest substance in the universe.

Swords made of silver are way more expensive and shouldn't be wasted and dented against steel weaponry. At least, according to the books.

Realistically speaking you wouldn't want to dull or soften your silver sword on opponents where it doesn't really matter what you kill them with.

Silver is very soft as far as metal goes. You could probably bend the blade of a silver sword without a terrible amount of effort. Most things that are made out of silver today are actually combined with other elements to make them more durable, unless they're used purely for decorative purposes. Monsters in the world of the Witcher have what could best be described as an allergic reaction to pure silver, which is the only reason to have a silver sword at all. If you go up against real humans with a silver sword, you're basically going to get a sword bent, dulled and broken against their still pristine armor. Hence the need for a steel blade to compliment the silver.

Actually some monsters are weak to steel in the Witcher universe. Geralt says the steel is for both men and some monsters, while the silver one is for the monsters steel doesn't hurt.

While I have nothing against using even a Vanadium sword, I disliked the fact that I can't weild a simple shield. Nothing wrong with them two-handers, but damn I get tired fo dodging.
