I was wondering the following questions...

    1) Will the Witcher 3 have more nudity/sexual content than Grand Theft Auto V?

    2) Will the sexual content happen very frequently throughout the story and is it forced a lot?

    3) Can you turn the sexual content off?

    4) How much is there, is it pretty detailed and is there a lot of sexual content?

What's the context for these questions? Are you concerned about there being too much sexual content? Or is it that you want to make sure there's going to be enough?

Well the game isn't out yet, but if The Witcher 2 and the general scope of the game is anything to go by then GTA is tame as hell compared to The Witcher. In The Witcher 2 there was at least one lengthy sex scene that happens with little warning or explicit choice by the player during the main story quest. I wouldn't be surprised if The Witcher 3 had something similar at some point somewhere. I'm quite sure you won't be able to turn it off either.

The Witcher 2 had some of the most explicit nudity and sex I've seen in a non-pornographic video game. They don't shy away from that stuff. (I mean it's softcore at best, but still...) And even if you bypass all the sex scenes, there are still creatures in the world, like Succubus and Dryads, that showcase blatant nudity whether you want it or not.

If you're worried about a child seeing naked virtual ladies or something then The Witcher is probably not the best choice.

Well in the last trailer I watched there was a woman on a horse magically removing her top. Witcher games have lots of sexual content. If it's like the Witcher 2, most scenes will be by choice with a couple being story scenes like the Triss scenes. It's more detailed than a lot of games. It's not like Dragon Age Origins where they still have their underwear on for some reason. The only thing they don't really show fully is Geralt. The woman will show plenty, but you don't really see the act happening aside from seeing naked bodies going at each other while the obvious happens just off screen or blocked by something.

If you're asking because you want lots of nudity you're better off browsing the internet. If you're asking because you or someone you want to play the game is underage and you're worried about the content then you probably will want to avoid this unless you or whoever else cares is very lenient in the content of games.

I hope they treat the story ones as well as that Witcher 2 bath scene. Sex was happening, but it felt like they built up to it, and the payoff with the guys above ground had me laughing out loud.

It didn't feel like sex for the sake of "let's put boobs in it!" I don't even remember anything else being particularly explicit, but it's been awhile.

Nah you got the long and short of it. Although one would surmise that the difference between a love scene and a sex scene is a thin one, I think the Witcher 2 leaned more toward the former than the latter. The point of sex in the Witcher games isn't titillation, it's showing intimate moments between characters that emphasize how deeply they care for each other. In the Witcher 2's instance, it also provides context for why Geralt would choose to chase after Triss instead of the Kingslayer.

For the OP in general, I imagine if there's sexual content then I imagine it'll be handled as well as it was in the previous game.

@oldirtybearon: I wouldn't say that is exactly universally true. Geralt has the option to have sex with a lot of women in those games, and I highly doubt he "deeply cares" for most of them. Granted, few of those other random sexual encounters are anywhere near as prolonged as that Triss scene.

@zeik: You choose to indulge in those scenes, though, as many times as you like. If there's an indictment of anything to be made because of the whore house, it's of the player, not the fiction, because there is absolutely nothing in that game that forces you to participate in it at all.

Come to think of it, there's nothing that forces you to participate in the Triss scene, either. I guess my point is that there will be as much sexual content on offer as in the previous game, and it'll be your choice as to whether or not you participate in it.

@oldirtybearon: And Geralt is routinely portrayed as some crazed horny teenager, but the stuff I read in the books makes it an interesting character trait.

    So mild book stuff ahead:

It all comes back to Yennifer. It emphasizes that he's trying to fill a hole, but none of these women can live up to her. Geralt can fall into despair when a perfume is different from lilac and gooseberries. He keeps looking but no one can match the love of his life.

Now, the games have Triss as someone dearly important to him. But now Yennifer will show up in game for the first time, which will lead to one heck of a dynamic.

Granted, I haven't read all the novels yet so I'm not sure where they'll stand now. And I don't remember if the earlier games implied that Yennifer was killed by the Wild Hunt.

Long story short, love plays a big part in Witcher lore. It's "mature" storytelling in a way that isn't frequently pulled off in video games.

@oldirtybearon: The Triss scene isn't exactly forthcoming and obvious that it leads into a lengthy sex scene based on the dialogue. It would be very easy to stumble into it on accident if you didn't know it was there.

That is an exception though. Generally the sexy scenes are something you have to knowingly pursue.

Nudity on the other hand is part of the game wether you want it or not.

@csl316: Never read the books; apparently there's only one that's been translated into English. Interesting read on the character though.

@zeik: Nudity is a part of the game. It's also clearly labeled on the ESRB rating the game receives. I'm not sure why nudity is a big deal though. As far as the sexual content goes, the sex scenes and the like, that's all pursued by the player. The thing you're talking about before the Triss deal is probably the one grey area I'd concede to, but I'm not sure why it's a big deal one way or the other. I don't think I've seen anyone actually say that the way sexuality in the Witcher games is handled is bad. It's light years ahead of the way most American media portrays sex and love.

@oldirtybearon: Well that "nudity" label can mean any number of things in a game. If you even see half a second of nudity in some hidden optional scene that gets you the same label. The TC is asking how much there is, and I want to make it clear that it's a lot more pervasive than just hidden behind some optional sex scenes.

The Witcher 2 generally handled sex fine, but I thought Witcher 1 was pretty bad in that regard. Turning sex into a collectible card game was real dumb.

    "

PSLS: Each of The Witcher games contain some level of sexuality in them, and that has caused a bit of controversy in the past. What are your thoughts about sexuality in gaming and how have you approached the subject with The Witcher 3?

MT: We make mature games, for mature players (every Witcher game is for adults only) and sex is, well, a part of adult life. The key thing is not to overdo it, not to sell your game with sex. As long as you remain tactful in what you do, as long as you have a legitimate reason to put sex in your game, I think it’s quite safe to do so."

I remember Witcher 2 dialling back the sex a lot from Witcher 1, or at least the silly card stuff that felt out of place. I don't remember sex being all that overt or crass in Witcher 2 at all, actually. I can't imagine it will be different in 3.

The sex was way more explicit in The Witcher 2 though. They dialed back the quantity, but significantly ramped up the "quality", so to speak. Given that The Witcher 3 is a dramatically larger and more open game I suspect the quantity will increase again too.

    4) The game is not yet released. Nobody knows.

A thread encouraging others to speculate on the amount of sexual content in an unreleased videogame, especially with such specific questions, has not been particularly productive. If you want a more direct answer then maybe email the developers themselves? Because nobody else will know. On account of the game not being released yet.
