I tried to play witcher a couple of months ago. It was not pleasant for me in terms of gameplay. has there been any mods that change up how the game plays to be a bit more modern? In my mind i was just going to skip it and play the second one which seems quite doable, but i thought to check

Don't think so.
That's kind of a big request, and not one fans of the game would think of making anyway.
 
I do recall a number of mods that make the game several orders of magnitude even more hardcore and difficult. ^.^
