The Thief franchise consists of a series of first-person "sneaker" games, where you play as a master thief named Garrett, in a large sprawling steampunk-medieval metropolis simply known as "the City."

The Thief Franchise was received well by critics, and introduced new stealth mechanics to the genre. With shadow oriented gameplay, and surprisingly smart AI, Thief helped define the stealth genre. Many western "celebrity" game producers got their feet wet with the Thief games, including Warren Spector (Deus EX, Wing Commander) and John Romero (Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake.) But the most notable is probably Ken Levine of System Shock and Bioshock fame.
