Volition to Deep Silver.....hope not

#3 Edited by Cloudenvy (5729 posts) - 3 months, 29 days ago

Ha, Deep Silver. That's such a big fat bummer that I can't do anything but laugh.

Seems like Relic to Sega is official according to one of their employees:

I now work for Sega. Neat.

Huh. No EA or Activision purchases? What about the game franchises? Those going along with the developers who made them?

#6 Posted by BlastProcessing (879 posts) - 3 months, 29 days ago

It must really suck to be Volition right now. What a damn shame.

#7 Edited by Abendlaender (1462 posts) - 3 months, 29 days ago

Yo Patrice, you just got JeffGreen'd!

Turtle Rock is independent though, so that can't be true

Relic and Sega seems to be confirmed, and thank god for that

#8 Posted by OneKillWonder_ (1108 posts) - 3 months, 29 days ago

I simply refuse to believe that no one else made a better offer for Volition than Deep Silver. If this is true, they're doomed.

The others I am fine with, except that I still hope Vigil finds a new home. I also wasn't even aware that Turtle Rock had reformed after being acquired by Valve.

#9 Posted by Bulby33 (414 posts) - 3 months, 29 days ago

Vigil being screwed bums me out. Hopes it's not true.

The sales hearing hasn't concluded, these are all some grounded rumours. We'll get official results within the hour. IP's and studios are being bid on separately.

#11 Posted by TepidShark (929 posts) - 3 months, 29 days ago

I imagine associated franchises were part of getting said developer, right? (As in by getting Volition, Deep Silver also got Saint's Row, right?)

#12 Posted by phrosnite (3377 posts) - 3 months, 29 days ago

lol if Vigil Games gets shuttered.

#13 Posted by Abendlaender (1462 posts) - 3 months, 29 days ago

Man, this would suck for Vigil :(

Maybe Retro will hire some folks.

"We apologize for the announcement of the Shaundi fleshlight with every preorder of Saints Row 4: Supa Gangsta Edition. We totally didn't know they were doing that. We just gave them some money and said fuck it."

I don't understand why Ubisoft would pickup THQ Montreal, why did Patrice leave Ubisoft in the first place? If his reasons haven't changed, what's to stop him from doing it again?

Sega picking up Relic also seems odd, didn't they just explicitly state when Anarchy Reigns came out that they were getting out of retail, while Relic is a PC developer, I don't see them working all that well abandoning retail.

Volition to Deep Silver seems pretty good to me, they are small enough that they will probably won't restrict content in the next Saints Row which probably would have happened if they had gone to a bigger publisher.

I hope Relic continues to make Warhammer 40,000 games. I really want a Dawn of War III.

You guys are still gonna make good on my pre-order though, right? You still got a few boxes of them in the back?

Sorry, but I don't get the hate for Volition going to Deep Silver. They can market a game. Dead Island was marketed so that it became a franchise for them. It may have been misleading and the recent Dead Island muck up was pretty bad, but it seems like Deep Silver is making a go at becoming a more major player.

Volition to Deep Silver is extremely upsetting.

Any word on the WWE license?

I'm calling it. Relic is going to become a part of The Creative Assembly, which everyone forgets is part of Sega Europe...and one of their most profitable divisions.

Deep Silver.

That's hard to believe. Volition deserved better.

#26 Posted by Dallas_Raines (1493 posts) - 3 months, 29 days ago

Well, hopefully the Volition situation works out...

Definitely want Dawn of War III to see the light of day. Space Marine 2 would be nice as well.

There are rumours that EA got the license last week.

I unfortunately see EA grabbing the WWE license, for some strange reason. It seems like one of the "better fits," not exactly in terms of quality, but just of where it should go. Unfortunately.

Yeah, I imagine they could merge them into a "CA: Warhammer" studio or something, and have their main studios working on TW while Relic sits on the Warhammer and (hopefully) W40k licenses. I dunno, that purchase actually excites me.

Volition to Deep Silver... u avin a giggle?

#35 Posted by mosespippy (2610 posts) - 3 months, 29 days ago

I was looking at Deep Silver's arcade recently and to me they seemed to be a German THQ that's just 5 years shorter in it's life cycle (or a German Ubisoft that's 15 years shorter in it's cycle). It's full of licensed products and kids handheld games and then recently a few core games have been added to the collection. Basically they've been building a foundation for years on things you've never heard of and are just now starting to have the resources and desire to put out bigger games focussed on consumers like us. I think Volition is a good pick up as is Metro.

#36 Posted by Lyfeforce (213 posts) - 3 months, 29 days ago

So if THQ Montreal gets folded into Ubi, I can imagine one can hear Patrice's disbelieving laughter echoing through the tundra.

It also makes sense seeing how CA is going to be making Warhammer (not 40K) strategy games. Get the studios together, make a cohesive story, collaborate, and make some really good strategy games. This is really good news for Warhammer and Relic is what I'm saying.

@FrankCanada97@Karmum: I don't really have any issue with EA taking it.

Also, this is probably a stupid question but how exactly will the licensing work for THQ's other franchises? I assume acquiring Volition and acquiring Saints Row are two different things. Does Sega now own the entire Warhammer franchise along with Relic now?
#39 Posted by NoobSauceG7 (1014 posts) - 3 months, 29 days ago

That sucks for Vigil. Honestly Darksiders 2 was one of my favorite THQ games, South Park has a good home at Ubisoft I think, hopefully all these games turn out ok. It is a real shame to see THQ go.

#40 Posted by FrankCanada97 (4036 posts) - 3 months, 29 days ago

@DDinvesting just tweeted some dollar amounts:

THQ auction results: 26M for Relic (Sega), 2.5M for Montreal (Ubisoft), 11M for Evolve (Take-Two), 22.3M for Volition (Koch Media), 500k Homefront (Crytek), 5.8M for Metro (Koch Media), South Park for 3.2M (Ubisoft)

#41 Posted by jjm494 (84 posts) - 3 months, 29 days ago

Glad to see Relic and Volition have good homes.

Now, hopefully Red Faction and Saint's Row wind up with Volition. A small part of me will die if that doesn't happen.

And for the love of god, why doesn't Vigil have a home yet. Hell, Get them Nintendo and let them have a crack at the Zelda Series! Or maybe Warner can grab them to feel more like a part of the big boys club. Just someone please!

#42 Posted by altairre (668 posts) - 3 months, 29 days ago

I still find it hard to believe that Deep Silver got Volition.

So, this will make the Warhammer and 40K cross-over they talked about on the Bombcast, or wherever it was, a reality? I wouldn't say no to that.

So apparently it all sold for $71.3 million. That wasn't much more that Clearlake's initial offer.

I really hope someone saves Vigil. They're a a talented developer and I'd at least like to see one more Darksiders game from them.
