Players in one of the many game worlds take on a role, and goes on a quest to level up and gain power and fame.
It is a free to play game, and players can play forever without paying a cent, but if you pay for a "Premium Account", you will gain access to additional features and content.
Tibia originally started out with only one world, simply called Tibia, with only one town, Thais.
It has since gained quite a few new servers, 74 to be exact, and towns, the original server is still active but is now known as Antica, and the number of towns has increased to 11.
Your character have a few different stats, these are:
Health(HP), Mana and Capacity(Cap). You also have skills in fist-, sword-, axe- and club-fighting, distance fighting which cover any ranged physical weapons, shielding and magic level.
You can at any time change your characters outfit, and there are plenty to choose from. If you are a premium player you will have access to more outfits, and you will also be able to unlock new ones through quests. Your characters sex is decided upon character creation but can be changed for a cost of a few premium days on the account page.
When you first log in you are located on Rookgard, a beginners area. Here you have to spend the first few levels, and then you can move on to "Main", which is what the main part of Tibia is called.
Once you reach level 8, you go to the Oracle, where you can decide on the town you would like to start in, aswell as your vocation.
Once you reach Main you will have to continue leveling up, gain friends and enemies. Participate in guild hunts, epic quests or massive PvP when guilds clash.
Sometimes a boss will spawn, which happens randomly but is very rare. These bosses drop some of the best items in the game and are very difficult to defeat.
There are also raids, which means that a certain race of creatures, for example the undead, spawn outside one of the cities and try to get in.
When you die in Tibia you will notice that the game is very punishing. When you die, you lose 10% of all your EXP and skills, you also lose your backpack and your equipment have 10% to drop each. The EXP and skill loss can be lowered by getting your promotion and getting the Blessings, though these are very expensive and only used by the very high level and rich players. To prevent your items and backpack to be dropped you need an Amulet of Loss, but this is also very expensive.
The knight also gains faster melee fighting skills, but are slow at magic levels.
The promoted title for the knight is Elite Knight.
The paladin also gains faster ranged fighting skills, and moderate magic levels.
The promoted title for the paladin is Royal Paladin.
The sorcerer also gains magic levels fast, but bad melee and ranged fighting skills.
The promoted title for the sorcerer is Master Sorcerer.
The promoted title for the druid is Elder Druid.
The promotion adds a few advantages, the most useful being less EXP and skill loss upon death and faster regeneration.
Tibia limits the amount of player killing by having a skull system. This is rather complicated to go through here but it basically means that if you attack someone before they attack you you will get a skull, and if you kill a person without a skull you get a frag. If you get 3 frags in 24 hours, you get a red skull, which means that if you die, you will lose all your equipment. If you wish to get into more detail here is a link with a more in depth description.
There are 3 different types of server.
PvP, Non-PVP and PvP-Enforced. PvP and Non-PvP are standard but PvP-Enforced has some special rules.
There is no cap on how many frags you can get, and there is no Amulet of Loss to protect your items if you die, you also get EXP if you kill players of the same or higher level.
Tibia updates its content twice a year, the summer and winter updates.
