Videogames that, for better or for worse, are based on an existing non-videogame franchise. Usually drawn from movies, tie-in games have also been made about TV shows, novels, and even crappy pop bands.
Sometimes companies decide name recognition is vital to a game's success. Sometimes this decision leads to disaster, but can sometimes add to the immersion. Examples of well-done tie-ins include GoldenEye: 007 and The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. Unfortunately, the case is far more often an incredibly mediocre gaming experience, or even an incredibly terrible one. It is commonly stated, for example, that E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial for the Atari 2600 is one of the worst games of all time, selling so few copies that the publishers were forced to bury thousands of cartridges in a landfill in New Mexico. Occasionally miracles do happen, however. Both the above-mentioned Riddick game and the more recent X-Men Origins: Wolverine are widely regarded to be superior products to the movies they were meant to tie into.Tie-In games
