A time paradox is when a person who travels in time does something that influences his past self in a way that traveling in time in the first place would not be possible or not have occurred without the first intrusion.

The idea that time is a linear and unalterable series of events, thereby by traveling through time you are incapable of changing anything from happening as you were predetermined to travel through time. Therefore you would be unable to complete actions that would prevent you from being unable to travel in time.

A simple time paradox would be the following:
If you were to go back in time and kill your grandfather would you be born and be able to go back in time to kill your grandfather?

Famous time paradoxes

Marty McFly making his mother fall in love with him, thereby denying his existence.
Phillip J. Fry in Futurama murdering his "grandfather", having sex with his grandmother and becoming his own grandfather.
Bill & Ted telling their past selves Rufus's name, effectively never making him introduce himself.
Killing Revolver Ocelot, therefore nullifying everything that happened in Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops, Peace Walker, 1, 2, and 4.
