    Tiny Text

    Concept »

With the shift to HD gaming consoles, some games now include text designed solely for HDTV's, text that becomes tiny and unreadable when viewed on a standard definition TV

    Short summary describing this concept.

    Why?

Tiny text is occurs when the developer only has HDTVs in-house. For this reason they optimize their own game to work on their systems, and never have time to check if their text is too small on other set ups. Developers often ignore these complaints due to the amount of time and effort it takes to reverse the problem. If the problem is discovered after the game has gone gold, it would require the developer to create a patch for the game, that arbitrarily increases the size of all the text in the game. This would risk the placement of the text and may make it look "awkward" or misplaced. For the most part, if players have good eye sight most text can be read. However in cases like Lost Planet, where the text is already very small for HDTVs, the characters appear as mushed scribbles on SDTVs. At the same time, Lost Planet's woes were cured before release, unlike Dead Rising and Banjo and Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts.
