The Tokimeki Memorial series follows a male student (female in the Girl's Side games) as they attempt to maintain a loving relationship with one or more girls. Compared to other games like them at the time, the Tokimeki Memorial series presented a sanitized version of a visual novel-like setting that was less sexually charged and playable for general audiences.

First released in 1994, the first game was released for the PC Engine utilizing its CD-ROM add-ons to deliver an experience with enhanced graphics and CD quality audio. The game was re-released on PlayStation with enhanced sound and high quality video, making it the most definitive release of the game.

The second game in the series widened its scope by introducing 3D graphics to certains parts of the game and more fleshed out writing depicting its characters and stories.
