A retro-style brawler for the DS focused on the beast cops, a group of Tokyo police detectives that beat justice into criminals one punch at a time.

    Great...except for the game part.

Alright, so I have a huge soft spot for anything that looks like a vintage Sega game. Tokyo Beatdown looks like equal parts Dynamite Cop and Diehard Arcade all mixed up and poured into the stage design from Yakuza. The dialog and characters are extremely clever. Halfway through I found myself wishing someone would spin it off into a tv series. Not just because the whole bat shit insane police department was fascinating, but because I'd much rather watch Tokyo Beatdown then have to play it.

Ultimately, it's the game that interferes with itself. Controls are sluggish, commands work sporadically and the fighting just isn't very fun. Despite the impressive graphics and enjoyable humor the gameplay is sorely lacking.

While I'd love to see Lewis Cannon and his co-workers in an improved sequel, somehow I doubt that will ever happen.
