Say you were upgrading the tanks, Do you upgrade only one squad with heavier weapons? Or do you upgrade that class in general? Because if you only upgrade one squad of Tanks, and loost them, it was a waste of good command points.

That's the point in evacuating harmed units.

You upgrade a SINGLE unit, not a unit TYPE. Moreover, if you have 3 TANKS units in you battalion, you can call only  that many on the battlefield.
If you upgrade a TANK unit and it gets disabled, you won't lose the unit (and the upgrades) if the transport 'copters manage to take it away before the enemy finishes it off. When a unit is disabled (greyed out), it still has some HPs. The enemy can still attack the unit. If it is completely destroyed, you lose all the upgrades and your unit will be replaced by a fresh unit of the same type. But if you give the "evacuate" command before it's disabled or the 'copters manage to take the unit away from battle, you'll still have the upgraded unit in your battallion.

Ok, just to rectify the bullshit I wrote last time...

Well. The upgrades are bought fore EVERY unit of that PARTICULAR type in your battallion, but they only apply to those units of a certaink rank and above.
Let's say, for example, you have a battallion with 4 TANK units, among the rest.
When you upgrade a TANK unit you are actually buying an upgrade for all your 4 tank units, but said upgrade only applies to those tank units that have a certain rank.

If you happen to lose some of your units on the field, so that, for example, you have 2 rank 3 tank units and 2 fresh (rank 1) tank units, the order in which they are deployed on the battlefield is from the higher rank to the lower, so that you always use best units first. I'm quite sure you can change the order of deployment in the options.
