I got some strange news in the mail this past weekend.

Turns out Ubisoft have licensed the shooting technique my father developed for use by Sam Fisher in SC:C.

The system is called Center Axis Relock and can be seen here:

What are the chances of that happening?

That's pretty awesome if true, but since when do you have to license shooting techniques?  Seems silly.

@EvilTwin: Well, the guy invented it. I'm sure you don't need his permission to utilize it in a real life setting, and you MAY not even need to do that to utilize it in an entertainment medium, but I can see Ubisoft going out of there way to pat the guy on the back. It gives more awareness to this elaborate system them put in place, basically eliminates anything resembling a possible lawsuit someday, and it's drops in the bucket, to them.

Seems like a win/win/win situation, for everyonr involved.

Plus, doesn't it just look damned cool?

very cool looking, although it was kinda awkward/cheesy looking when that dev started showing us how it 'works'... leave it to the gameplay sir. There's not a lot that's cool about seeing a very unbadass person display that technique, just feels phony even if the intent is more then honest.

Interesting. Has your dad taught you the technique?

I've seen stuff like his in the back of seedy gun magazines in ads with titles like, "KILL THEM IN THE FACE HARD WITH THIS TECHNIQUE" and never gave it much thought.

EDIT: I just saw a demonstration video. I can see its merits if you're very close to your assailant(s).

Are you telling me that your dad actually payed for and went through the process of having his shooting technique patented to his name?
Are you seriously expecting me to believe that?
Because if he did. Well I feel sorry for his mental state.

It's not exactly surprising, this is how America works, patents and copyrights. Wanting to control what you invent isn't crazy at all.

    @DJJoeJoe:

Except that he wouldn't get a cent when it came to this sort of thing if somebody chooses to copy it. ie: Ubisoft don't even need to pay anybody for using this technique in the game.

In other word's; he's spending upto $400 to patent this technique and not getting a cent for doing so. Which is normally the very reason somebody patent's something. So that it is their's and their's alone to profit from how they please.

I suppose if he just wanted to make sure the technique had his name on it, out of some sense of pride, I can understand.

Ah, well... I understand and completely agree with you that wanting to control what you invent isn't crazy. But as a lawyer I know that this sort of thing is just a waste of time and a waste of the patanter's money.
