I'm still on the fence with this game (having never enjoyed the traditional splinter cell series). But there doesn't seem to be much in the way of early reviews. Is there a hard review embargo for this one? Like, release day?

Don't think so, IGN's already released their review.

I don't know if it's this one, but a company did put a review embargo on a game until a week after release. I guess their statement is that they want the media to enjoy it the same as the consumers.

They gave it a 9.3 - a review good enough that they were allowed to get it out before any Embargo dates were lifted. It's something to consider when they're the ONLY ones who have a review posted.
It all looked good except near the end of the review they mention the campaign is about 5 hours long - that probably scored Ubisoft some more negative numbers from other sites/publications.

But isn't an embargo a legal barricade that affects all publications?

I really want to see the reviews go up as I really am interested in picking this game up but I am not the biggest fan of stealth games.

No, it's neither I believe.  It's more of a gentleman's agreement than a legal document.  If embargo's are broken then publishers might not give the website/publication any future access to their games.  Also embargo's are usually used to either ensure that websites don't just base reviews on screenshots and print reviews as soon as possible or in this case to give a certain website an advantage.

    Five hours? Five hours?

If that's true, this is not a game I'm gonna pick up anytime soon.

    IGN third paragraph second page

All of these new gameplay elements are quickly explained in the single-player campaign. These things are so intuitive, that the tutorial is over before you know it. The campaign is a brisk and enjoyable five-hour experience that has only two odd spots.

Got an 8 in both EDGE and Games TM here in the UK.

An 8 from EDGE should be all you need to go out and buy it :P
