So this came about skimming a PC Gamer article, and the post is partly about the game, but partly about hype in general.
I've been a fan of Tomb Raider since forever and played almost all of em with varied levels of enjoyment. And seeing all this coverage is getting me super exited about all the propositions and promises of a stinking fresh hot reboot. This is what I feel in my heart, and it's still my overall opinion but my brain keeps telling me that once I sit down and play it, I am once again going to eventually realize "Oh wait, this is still just another videogame".
I've always been a starry-eyed kind of guy but I'm starting to get jaded, which doesn't sound like an ideal thing to be but getting your dreams stomped out isn't really peachy either... So where do you guys lie? Do you hope for the best? Assume the worst? Are marketers selling what they believe in, or just feeding you lies?

A young and inexperienced Lara Croft is shipwrecked on a mysterious island in this reboot of the beloved action adventure franchise, which departs from the mood of prior games in the series.
Am I a fool to get really exited about the new Tomb Raider?
I don't think you're a fool. From what I've read, there are some very interesting changes from the previous games. I have never been a fan of the franchise but I am excited based on the Game Informer article alone. I don't pre-order games without seeing uncut gameplay though.
The last few TR games have been pretty good.. But rushed to release.
My current stance on this game is that of cautious optimism. I think it has a chance of being better than some of the later entries in the series, but I'm not quite convinced it will do for this series what the new Mortal Kombat did for that one.
This definitely looks like an interesting take on the franchise and should give the franchise the proper reboot it needs at this point.
From what have been told, this seems to be more of a survival game rather than platformer. If they do it well, it can be great. Something unique and innovative.
I think you're right to be excited. I've been looking to play a Tomb Raider again for a long time, but they always end up being the same old thing. This one seems like the first real change in both feel and look (except for Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light obviously). I am genuinely excited for this game as well.
The demo looked great and some of their ideas sound interesting, but it was really straightforward and full of QTE's. I'm withholding judgement until they show something more substantial, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

The last full fledge TR game (Underworld) wasn't straightforward and had no QTE, people gave it a lot of shit because of it.
<--- unashamed lover of all things Lara Croft
I try not to get excited about a game until it's about a month or two away. If I was to allow myself to get excited about Tomb Raider now it couldn't possibly live up to the expectations that I would have put onto it, and then I would be inevitably disappointed with the final game.
It looks alright for what it is, I'm just scared that the focus might be shifting away from some of the things I like about tomb raider and that the open world might get tedious.
I'm madly excited about it
But then again I love every single Tomb Raider game except for Underworld
Yes, even that one (that one in this case may be Chronicles or Angel of Darkness)
Nah, it looks promising. With game coverage being co comprehensive these days you should have a decent idea of how the game is going to turn out. If you're on the fence by the time it comes out, read a review from a publication/person you trust or tend to agree with and you should be fine...but then again, you probably already know how to buy games.
TR always seems to be behind the trend on new types of best sellers IMO, hopefully they've hit the mark in keeping up with the times unlike Duke Nukem-- I'm hopeful but now banking on it. They're new to the genre with each new release... which is always unnerving.
