Do you think they should take Lara's pants off in the final game

The E3 demo reel had way too much panting.

GiantBomb's Day 0 podcast addressed it as excessive and akin to "torture porn". Does the rest of the GB community agree?

Edit: I tried to make a poll for this. Sorry. :(

I read that title in a very different way.
I wouldn't say it was excessive, it is weird though.

I really like the direction they're going with the new tomb raider, i'll take a leap of faith on this one and let them go as desired. Also i'm way into the torture porn. not in the usual sense, but just in how Lara always got out of every adventure without a damn scratch. Not very real. Here she's breaking finger bones, bleeding, cuts, gashes. She's had a reduction.

She's a strong, female protagonist now and not a laughing stack of boobs. I like that, it's a rarity to see a good female protagonist. hopefully they'll resist the urge to give her a boyfriend.

It was sligntly excessive yeah, but man, she has a hot voice. Also slightly disappointed after reading the title of this thread hehe

Alex likes to over use the term "torture porn".   I saw it as a girl fighting for her life.  What do you expect, giggling?

You OP are a very sick and perverted... oh wait, you mean pantING. =P

I haven't seen the demo reel yet. Is she constantly panting?

#7 Posted by shiptoncraig (149 posts) -

I was watching the live stream in the lounge and using laptop speakers for sound.  Let's just say that the panting was bad enough for it to seem like I was watching something else...

Considering the context of running for her life with a giant stomach would and probably broken bones, it is very justified panting.

She's the female Nathan Drake! Also, this game looks amazing. As for the panting, it did come across as a little sexual moan-y, to the point where I was afraid that my roommate was thinking that I was listening to very loud porn. It's cool though, I don't mind it.

Wow, this is not what I was expecting from the title.

#12 Posted by Gamer_152 (14051 posts) -

I really don't think it goes as far as to be classified as torture porn, but I'm not sure how I feel about about Lara's new grunts and groans. I certainly don't think the argument that "it's realistic" or "it's what a person in that position would actually do" is a justification with itself though, video games are a form of entertainment and as such realism can only be used as means to entertaining the player, if realism is used for the sake of realism, to the detriment of the actual entertainment value then that will negatively impact the game. Like I say it's gonna take me a while to make up my mind on how I feel about this one.

@Gamer_152: Perhaps you're over thinking it :p

#14 Posted by DeF (4799 posts) -

comparing it directly with the Uncharted 3 demo during the Sony presser, they aren't much different except that Nate is a dude and does more grunting which we, who are predominately male, don't immediately associate with porn. Lara's moan/grunt sounds when she falls/gets hurt remind us of that (maybe also due to some wishful thinking since that character model is extremely gorgeous!). I like her voice and the demo looked awesome. That's all I can say right now. Looking forward to finally play the game next fall.

While we don't have enough information at this point to get a full sense of character, based on what I've seen so far, I question the label of strong female protagonist.

The character seems no less two-dimensional to me. It's a two-dimensional character in a different direction, but I don't see anything in the way of strength (by which I assume you meant of character given that Lara's never been physically weak). One of the biggest problems I have with women in games is that developers and writers will be praised based solely on the absence of over-sexualization. A lot of people complain about women getting shafted in games with a lack of fully-rounded characters, but it's not as if male characters frequently rise above cut-outs, either. The Tomb Raider revamp is the latest in a string of games I've seen praised for female character when they've basically taken the same bland-ass everyman and slapped him with mammary tack-ons. This often amounts to applauding equal laziness with a different tint.

As I said, I don't know enough to draw any conclusions about this character, and I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you. I just wonder what the basis of your praise of the character is. Is it anything beyond ditching contrived sex appeal?

Me, too.  Honestly and I thought this was going to be a call for some sort of return to Lara's original outfit.  A de-panting meaning replacing her long pants for her traditional shorts.  At first I thought a DLC or unlockable would be a good way to satisfy the purists, but after seeing the game in action during the MS press conference, considering all that blood and dirt, I'm not sure that's possible.   Might just have to leave that Lara look in our memories.

Now, as to her heavy breathing, I really thought it added a sense of pain and desperation to the sequence.  I was scared for her and literally cringed when she took that drop at the start of the video and later when she had to push her fractured ribs back into place.  Ouch!  I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the "torture porn" label, but I can't deny that the woman in distress in a dark and rotted cave did make me think of the ads I saw for Hostel or Turistas.  Grudgingly, I admit it might apply.  Still, I'm not sure that is a bad thing.  Those movies (and I am not a fan) are meant to convey a sense of primal terror and that was certainly the case with the demonstration at the conference.  I don't believe they should remove the hard breathing because the character is struggling for her very life.  It added a level of authenticity to the scene for me.

@drbendo: no you've pretty much hit the nail on the head there, but lets face it, improving from the DD sporting invinciable world saving badass that was lara croft can't be too hard. I'm basing my new opinion solely on what she isn't any more and essentually how she is no longer super attractive and much more mortal. Combine that with how the game will clearly focus on her survival and it's not too far of a logic leap to assume she'll be a strong woman in this game. hopefully they can continue with that semblance of a cut out and create a persona for her too. but for now i'll take the stepping stone to a better lara croft as a sign of better things to come.

Yeah just undies would be fan...tastic! I cringed a bit as well with the "uhs" and "oohs" but you have to give the developer the benefit of the doubt that it is an origin story, so you can imagine a young girl in that situation being that terrified. I'd bet Brad dollars by the end of the game she's as calm as a hindu cow.

Terrible post title.

I was watching this on the loud speakers and I was too scared that I was going to be accused of watching porn. However, the demo was really intense and it might actually be the first tomb raider (this generation) that I’m hyped for.

really? "no longer"? this is without question the prettiest game-Lara there has ever been (cause she FINALLY looks like a real person, not like a blow-up doll)

Yes. Remove the pants.

:D

That game is looks brilliant and your slightly sick in the head if you think this is torture porn. Lara's in deep shit this time around, which is why she grunts and screams a lot

okay my point wasn't very articulate :p i meant to say how she isn't represented as a blow up doll any more and is now something akin to a more realistic beauty, not something out of a hentai.

Anyone who listens to Screened knows that Alex and Rorie like to throw that word around and get super uncomfortable when women are treated poorly in any aspect.

Yeah but she's ship wrecked, of course she's going to be all bruised up. It's not torture porn since there's a legitimate reason why she is in the current state that she is

#29 Posted by FrankCanada97 (4039 posts) -

I felt the grunts and moaning were a little excessive. I can understand what they are going for but some parts sounded weird. That aside, I'm interested in how this game turns out. An open-world, survival-horror Tomb Raider is intriguing.

She had a stick in her stomach and a broken bone. I think her performance is expected.

#31 Posted by Grilledcheez (3943 posts) -

No, she needs to make noise, LOTS OF NOISE

This thread title is amazing.

I think that given the context of a someone normal person thrown into extraordinary circumstances, a lot of huffing and puffing is expected.

Can anyone tell me when they talk about Tomb Raider in the podcast? Tried skipping around to find it myself but I can't find it.

Yeah, they should. What are you going to say next? You want to wear lara's panties over your head?

#42 Posted by High_Nunez (218 posts) -

I love GB crew n' all, but if it doesn't have a nudge, and a wink, with a tongue planted firmly in a cheek, then they have problems handling it.

@niamahai: sorry just having dirty thoughts again, lara can sit on my head anytime she wants with those pants.

Oh wait you mean the way she breaths as in panting?, well that's sort of hot.
#45 Edited by afrokola (547 posts) -

Yes, yes they should definitely take her pants off in the final game. Maybe it'll be a cheat code or something.

#46 Posted by DonChipotle (2693 posts) -

You'd be panting too if you just fell and probably cracked a rib or something and then had to escape a cave in.

#47 Posted by AuthenticM (3699 posts) -

If you think this is torture porn, do not watch Hostel. I repeat: do NOT watch Hostel.

#48 Posted by afrokola (547 posts) -
