As speculated, the next Tomb Raider game will be unveiled in this coming issue of Game Informer magazine, publisher Square Enix announced this morning. Digital Game Informer has since released the cover art for said issue, which shows a battered and gashed Lara Croft with a bow slung over her right shoulder. You can also see a ravaged ship in the distance and dark storm clouds above.

Long-time Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics will be heading up the project, which will probably be a reboot of the franchise. According to a Square Enix, this game (simply titled "Tomb Raider") will feature a "young and inexperienced" (as well as an "ordinary") Lara Croft who "finds out just how far she must go in order to stay alive" after her ship wrecks on a beach.

"Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider," said Darrell Gallagher, head of Crystal Dynamics in a press release. "This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other."

Here's that Game Informer cover, by the way:

    No Caption Provided

No other details (including platforms) have been released, but, if you do want to learn more about this title, just purchase the January issue of GI, as it'll have 10 whole pages dedicated to Tomb Raider.

The last few Tomb Raiders game have been cool, the Lara Croft game was unique so they have done a good job with it so far, hopefully it will be a good reboot

A promo render looks "meh"?  There's no details about the actual game what so ever.

There was leaked gameplay details from a few months back and they sound promising.  It at least seems they're going in a different direction than Uncharted instead of just flat out copying it, which would have been the easy thing to do.

God I love marketing hyperbole. A JOURNEY LIKE NO OTHER. Seriously. Do they write this stuff expecting people to buy in to it?

More accurate would probably be "Yeah, you've probably done this journey before, but this time, BOOBS!".

It's the sad truth when there's only a couple of guys living normal lives that post the news here. Back when I was writing for an awesome but not-so-top-tier website, much of the front page stuff came from forums and other sites. It goes on the front door so the folks who don't browse the forums daily and don't traverse to other gaming news sites often still get the news (don't say they don't exist. Since I left SG, I only go to GB but I barely browse the forums, so we are out there.) I never would have seen this otherwise.

I don't begrudge them for having the users beat them to the punch with gaming news and updates as of course small team bleh bleh blah, but with how long it can take for them catch on is a little silly. Sometimes it's days before GB happen to take notice.

Haven't they "rebooted" this franchise like 4 times already? I feel like every new Tomb Raider game they put out is branded as a reboot. The last few have been pretty well-received though, so I won't speculate on the quality. I do remember the first 3 or 4 TR games on the PlayStation fondly... I've been thinking about picking one of these newer ones up but I dunno, I think the time has passed for me for Tomb Raider. Maybe if this one turns out well I'll check it out.

i wonder at what point it would become more beneficial to have this be a completely new IP with some Tomb Raidery inspiration.  I might actually be more interested in that, honestly, although I still want to see how this is gonna work out.

Man...everyone is so down on Tomb Raider. The Crystal Dynamics TR games have actually been pretty good and it sounds like they're serious about wanting this game to be something. People saying it looks like shit based on concept art and a promo picture are just dick heads.

I personally think that it doesn't matter that much. We get most of the big announcements from Twitter or Facebook anyway. And does couple hours of delay really matter? And most important thing to keep in mind, Giant Bomb is not a news heavy web site. We get only a few news about games here (no lawsuits, no business things, etc.).

There are lots of sites (blogs like Kotaku for example) for gamers who need to catch news as it happens. And I don't think there are many gamers that are visiting only one website about videogames and nothing else.

Not trying to sound preachy or too defensive, I just don't think that Giant Bomb's couple hours delay is such a big deal. Giant Bomb is a different website.

The Ol' girl is due for a reboot.  I'm glad she saw success with the downloadable title, hopefully they'll take the remake serious and not try to do simple cash ins and sully the once proud franchise more than it has been in the past.

Ahh, I liked the English Noble stuff. TEEN STUCK ON AN ISLAND WITH ZOMBLERZ and I just have to sort of shrug. Tomb Raider was good for what It was, trying to shoe horn Lara into things doesn't really work in my opinion. The 18+ Rating as far as gore and dialogue is concerned sounds promising though.

    Added :
"There are brutal deaths in the game this time. One is described as a deranged man stabbing Lara in the chest and then closing her eyes after she's dead. Another includes a boulder falling on her leg to trap her before another falls and crushes her head. "

Hopefully Square Enix doesn't try to "anime up" Tomb Raider. It kinda worries me, I've been interested in Deus Ex: HR but it seems like the "Ghost in the Shell" style is being used more heavily in it (granted there was always a little of that in DE).
