Now the tenth game in the Tony Hawk series, Activision is rebooting the franchise to establish an entirely new way to play a skateboarding game with a motion-sensing skateboard peripheral.
In Tony Hawk: Ride, the series will see a number of changes. Since EA's skate appeared on the scene, a massive shift in the skateboard game segment has taken place. Tony Hawk had pigeon-holed itself into being an arcadey combo-fest, and skate approached the genre with a more of a simulation approach. Gone is the traditional developer, Neversoft, replaced by Robomodo . Rumors of a "skateboard" controller circulated around December of 2008. The peripheral is said to be a motion sensing balance board (think Wii Fit) that will allow the players to "put down the controller, step on the board, and feel the sensation of going big. Shift your weight to turn and balance grinds, kick back on the tail to ollie, and lean into airs to pull off huge spins."As of 15. May 2009, a teaser trailer confirmed the new way of controlling to be a skateboard peripheral, and unveiled a new logo. A teaser site was launched at the same time, and suggests that it will be playable at E3 2009. The trailer and site confirmed the subtitle and the removal of the "'s" from Tony Hawk's, as in the previous games, all similar to the new direction that Activision wishes to take the franchise.
Although no specific information has been released from Activision, the game is currently underway. The publisher stated that the game is undergoing research and testing, promising the gamers of "a new direction for the brand". In August 10, 2009, Activision confirmed that the release date is scheduled to be on store shelves on November 17, 2009 for 120 dollars.
