An Unfinished Port
Vicarious Visions was selected to create this port of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4.
Vicarious Visions is pretty well known to Tony Hawk fans as the company that has created most of the handheld Tony Hawk games. This was the only Tony Hawk game that they have ever ported for a console, in this case, the PS1. Vicarious Visions does fair job porting this game. The gameplay is very much like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 & 2. Obviously, many of the gameplay mechanics that existed on the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube versions have been removed. The trick list is significantly smaller as well.
However, there are certain parts of this game that really makes it feel like an unfinished port. The detail on the levels are not nearly as good as the previous Tony Hawk games on the Playstation and the physics are not nearly as good either. The levels are surprisingly big but unfortunately since this version doesn't have the people or any of the other insane stuff running through the levels like the other versions, it makes for a pretty boring experience. The framerate is also very poor. While the previous Tony Hawk games for the Playstation didn't have the greatest framerate either, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 feels incredibly sluggish and gets worse when you're doing tricks.
However, one thing that does remain the same is the games controls. The controls, for the most part, are the same as the PS2 version with a few changes due to the smaller trick list. The game manages to fit good portion of the soundtrack on this version. Personally, i don't care much for the soundtrack for Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 because i don't think it's quite as well setup as the soundtrack was for the previous three games.
Overall, it just seems like Vicarious Visions ran out of time with this port and it feels more like half of a game rather then complete game.
