Overview
Tony Hawk's Underground is a skateboarding game developed by Neversoft and published by Activision (Company) for the PlayStation 2 (Platform), Xbox (Platform), and GameCube (Platform) on October 27, 2003.
The fifth installment of the long-running Tony Hawk (Franchise) franchise and the sequel to Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4, Tony Hawk's Underground features a revamped narrative-based Career Mode where players start their custom skater as a local nobody from suburban New Jersey (Location) and with the help of their opportunistic friend Eric Sparrow (Character) and various professional skaters from throughout the U.S.A., rise to become a well-known superstar.
Alongside a focus on character customization, the game features new creation options, including custom tricks using the Create-A-Trick mode, custom objectives using the Create-A-Goal mode, and custom skateboard decks using the Create-A-Deck mode. The PS2 version also supports the ability to map custom faces to the player's skaters. The game also introduces new options for maneuverability, including disembarking from the board (for climbing up to places normally unreachable by skating, or for better preparation mid-combo), wallplanting/wallpushing, acid-dropping onto ramps, and driving certain vehicles. It also adds more tricks per skater, including unlockable Special Trick slots and "double-tap" Grinds.
Tony Hawk's Underground, like previous installments in the series, features crossover characters from different franchises as hidden playable skaters: Gene Simmons (Person) (the bassist from the band KISS (Franchise)) and Iron Man (a superhero from the Marvel (Franchise) franchise of the same name).
The game also received a handheld release by Vicarious Visions for the Game Boy Advance (Platform), released alongside the other consoles. This version still maintains the 2D isometric gameplay from the developer's previous ports of the series. The game also received a limited PC (Platform) release by Beenox, exclusively in Australia, sometime in 2004.
