Shogun 2: Total War Announced

Posted by BradNicholson (1556 posts) -

After 10 years of cranking out Total War games, Creative Assembly is still down with making another Total War game. In fact, Sega has announced that the studio is currently crafting a sequel to its original Total War game, creatively titled Shogun 2: Total War. Like its predecessor, you'll be tasked with re-uniting a splintered feudal Japan. But in order to do this you'll need to use pansy crap like diplomacy and economics along with the manly sport of warfare. The end goal, of course, is to become the shogun.

The press release notes that Shogun 2 will feature a new AI system inspired by Sun Tzu's Art of War, a book that already happened to be on my top ten list of "Things AI Should Be Designed After."  Considering that the game is a sequel, you shouldn't be too surprised to see improved visuals, as well as better land and sea battle elements (including, for the first time, coastal warfare).

Shogun 2 will also purportedly sport an eight-player competitive multiplayer component on top of separate competitive and cooperative modes inside its campaign multiplayer mode. Expect character progression frills, too, if a leaked fact sheet (via Ace Gamez) is legit.

Some artwork has been released on top of these details. Highlight? In one of the images there's a rather colorful scene of a couple of dudes getting stabbed by arrows.

"Developing Shogun 2: Total War gives us the opportunity to use recent technology to portray one of history's most exciting civil wars," Creative Assembly creative director Mike Simpson said in a statement. "Ever since we developed Shogun: Total War 10 years ago, the team at The Creative Assembly has always dreamt of using our accumulated experience to revisit Total War in Feudal Japan."

Shogun 2 is slated for a PC release in 2011.

oh man...

Oh my god, yes. Thank you. This was the best option for the total war series, second only to a Rome re-make (only in my opinion, because I love the Romans and that time-period in Europe)

@gosukiller: Don't you only get the quest from video's?
#6 Posted by Daveyo520 (7378 posts) -

I'm looking foreword to it greatly. I love this series and the 1st one was cool.

Man I hope the map style and all that is similar to the first, really loved that game, even more than the new Total War games.

This makes me extremely happy. I just installed the first one on my computer again to play around with and was thinking 'Man, why haven't we seen a sequel to this?'

#13 Posted by skjeggen (42 posts) -

Fuck yeah!! The first one was freaking awesome.

Hopefully the small scale will result in a highly polished final product.

Also, I really like the style on display. Really looking forward to it.

Good news, but it's too bad my PC won't be able to run it without dying. It was bad enough with Empire Total War.

Excellent! Loved the setting of the first one.
I was wondering if CA was gonna go into more modern conflicts, b/c the line-combat that Total War is renowned for simulating kinda goes out of vogue around 1918.

Woooo! this is the best news ive heard all day

#22 Posted by HombreGato (61 posts) -

I need a new PC, seriously it occasionally finds GTA:SA hard to run

#25 Posted by Milkman (18006 posts) -

I really like the Total War series but I've never played Shogun. Yeah, I know. I'm horrible. Excited about this nonetheless.

#26 Posted by Meteora (5844 posts) -

Certainly wasn't expecting them to go back to fedual Japan. Good call I suppose.

#27 Posted by Contra (252 posts) -

Hell yes.

Though they were running out of theaters of war without going over the same ground over and over.

#28 Posted by GozerTC (485 posts) -

Nice.  Shogun and the Mongol Invasion were the only Total wars I ever finished. (Though I did like Rome) I look forward to a sequel, though if it's not on the Mac (and I won't hold my breath) I'll probably wait longer to get it.

Been waiting for this for a long time. This will be glorious.

#30 Posted by DeadMonkeys (835 posts) -

Anyone else misread it as Shotgun 2? I was wondering how I missed Shotgun 1.

YES!!!!!!

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want another Rome Total War!!!!!!!!!!!
#33 Posted by z0m (3 posts) -

A Rome 2 would have been better, but heck! I'll take it!

#34 Posted by wizall (55 posts) -

Fuck.Yes.

#35 Posted by nyxywyxy (2 posts) -

I am extremely happy about this. I used to play Shogun: TW all the time. I wonder if it'll run on my computer, this might put me over the threshold of buying a new motherboard, etc.

#36 Edited by MeatSim (11003 posts) -

Good setting, glad they went back instead of doing a wolrd war 2 or a modern warfare Total War game.

#37 Posted by lordofultima (6561 posts) -

SHOGUN 2, YES

#38 Posted by theMuse (228 posts) -

Awesome. I think any fan of the Total War series has been waiting for Shogun 2. Shogun is still definitely my favorite Total War.

#39 Posted by myghart (194 posts) -

A Tom Cruise joke? Nah, Tom Cruise *is* a joke.

#40 Posted by Beomoose (730 posts) -

Really Really looking forward to this. Didn't get into TW until Rome, but been a huge fan ever since. Concentrating on better AI? Hell yes!

#41 Posted by ShoddyGo (36 posts) -

Oh hells yeah.
I can never get enough of total war.

#42 Posted by Subach (42 posts) -

I would be more excited for a second Rome, honestly, but Samurai are pretty awesome, and there's not a lot of quality Feudal Japan wargames for the computer.
Looking forward to the enhanced AI, that was the one thing that Rome could have used, and from what I understand, it hasn't really gotten as better as it should in the following entries.

#43 Posted by Alcamin (176 posts) -

I thought as much. It's been a long time coming, and was the obvious next step in the series. I can't say I'm hugely interested in it, from a historical perspective, but as a Total War fan I'll definitely be keeping an eye on it. Actually, it will be really interesting to look back at the series as a whole when this is released and reflect on TW's impact on the genre. I predict good things. :)

Thanks for the info, and good luck CA! Keep up the great work!

#44 Posted by FlyWelshGuy (7 posts) -

Holy crap! Still play the 1st game and love it!

Really can't wait for this, the first game was my favourite of the series. (I've got most of them bar Rome)

#48 Posted by giyanks22 (2950 posts) -

Yeah this was definitely the best total war game.

#49 Posted by c1337us (5877 posts) -

Hopefully this game won't murder my lap top because I would like to play it.

#50 Posted by Phantom_Crash (304 posts) -

I have never played the Shogun TW. What can I expect from this one, guys?
