Troika was founded in 1998 by ex key Fallout team members Jason D. Anderson, Leonard Boyarsky and Tim Cain. They focused on making deep, unique and ambitious computer RPGs.

In 2001, Troika developed its seminal role playing game, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, published by Sierra Entertainment.
In 2003, Troika developed a D&D dungeon crawler RPG, The Temple of Elemental Evil: A Classic Greyhawk Adventure, published by Atari.
In 2004, Troika developed what would be their final game, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, published by Activision.

Even late in the development stage of Vampire: The Masquerade, Troika was experiencing financial shortfalls. In 2005, when their prototype 3D engine and design proposal for a post apocalyptic role playing game failed to garner interest and funding from publishers, the developer began to lay off its entire staff and liquidate its assets.

All of Troika's original founding members have found work in other game development studios. Jason Anderson has joined inXile and is working as creative director for an unannounced RPG. Leonard Boyarsky has joined Blizzard Entertainment is currently overseeing the development of Diablo III as lead world designer. Tim Cain is now design director at Carbine Studios developing an unnamed MMORPG for NCSoft.
