Turn-Based

Concept »

Turn-based games divide game actions into distinct parts, called turns. This gives the player time to strategically choose actions as the battle or events unfold.

Strategy games which encourage users to eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate.
Action Points

The value that determines how many events can take place in a character's turn in pure turn based combat as well as in the modern Fallout franchise.
Active Time Battle

Battle system associated with Final Fantasy series. First introduced in Final Fantasy IV.
Board Game

A board game is a game played on a mostly-static surface using markers or chits to indicate player progress. Many video game board games are based on tabletop games (Catan, Monopoly), but some, like Mario Party and Culdcept, are original designs that use board game design as a starting point.
Chess

One of the world's oldest board games, using eight pawns, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, a queen and king.
City Building

The concept of building a single city and its respective houses/institutions (Sim City etc.) or building cities as part of an extending empire (Civiliazation etc.)
Conditional Turn-Based Battle

The turn-based battle system used in Final Fantasy X.
Doomsday Clock

Armageddon is just around the corner. Games with a doomsday clock take place when the time between now and oblivion is finite and approaching fast.
Economy

Games that include a simulated economy which the player(s) can affect.
Fog of War

A staple in both the real-time and turn-based strategy genres, Fog of War simulates the unknowns of the battlefield by covering areas of the map, to be progressively revealed by the player.
Grid-Based Movement

Grid-based movement is a common staple of turn based strategy games that works similarly to chess.
Hotseat

Hotseat multiplayer mode allows multiple people to play the same game on one system. This generally only applies to turn based games such as Civilization IV or Advanced Wars.
Limit Break

A powerful attack in the Final Fantasy series, useable mostly when a character's hp is low or a certain condition has been met.
Pausable Real Time Combat

Combat that takes place in real time, but that can be paused to give commands to certain characters.
Point and Click

Point & click is an interface featured in a specific kind of adventure game, where you click on objects and characters to interact with them.
Press Turn System

The Press Turn System is the combat system used in several Shin Megami Tensei games. It allows players and enemies alike to take advantage of opponents weaknesses and provides a unique and challenging take on the turn based battle.
Random Encounter

A glitch found in many RPGs which repeatedly forces the player into combat situations when they are walking around an area such as a dungeon, cave, or overworld map. Some gamers defend random encounters for aiding the player in leveling up, but most consider it an annoyance.
Reaction Based Battle System

A turned based battle system that has a reactionary component.
Real-Time Combat

RPG combat in which combat actions are performed in real-time, rather than through a turn-based structure.
Research

Research involves spending resources to create new items or unlock upgrades.
Roguelike

Roguelike is a sub-genre of role-playing games characterized by the exploration of randomly-generated dungeons and permanent death. These characteristics were featured in the classic computer game Rogue, hence the term "Roguelike."
RPG Elements

Game mechanics traditionally found in role-playing games that are incorporated into a non-RPG title.
Squad

A squad is a group of military personnel who work together as a group. Popular in both single-player and multiplayer games, the other players within the squad can be either AI or other people.
Tactical Turn-Based Combat

Gameplay type emphasizing deliberately paced tactical battle where each side politely takes turns moving and attacking one another through varied forms of combat.
Tech Trees

A "Tech Tree" is a concept used mainly in strategy and role playing games. Unlocking a node in the tree generally unlocks some effect (example: a new ability in a role playing game or new unit in a strategy game). Unlocking a parent node allows access to its child nodes.
War

War is a series of organized conflicts carried on by force of arms between two or more nations or groups. Whether it never changes or has already changed is up for debate.
WeGo

WeGo is a turn-based style of gameplay where orders are given for both sides, and then executed simultaneously. During the execution phase, no player input is allowed.
