It is almost impossible to talk about Uncharted 3 in some kind of vacuum; it's amazing predecessor, Uncharted 2, is literally the blueprint for Uncharted 3 in almost every way. Unfortunately, the ability to replicate that great experience is not a smooth one. First off, the good. Uncharted 3 is still a beautiful game, without a doubt the best looking game on the platform at that point. There are still epic set pieces, the music is still appropriately stirring when it needs to be and the story is ambitious (though flawed). So what went wrong? Well, basically everything else. The aforementioned set pieces still impress but there are very little reason for them this time; they're literally shoehorned into the story in a very awkward way. They tend to stretch reality a little bit with them this time; it's easy enough to believe that Drake can escape from a burning Chateau, but to fall out of a plane and somehow survive by hanging onto a crate is sort of ridiculous. It wouldn't be hard to forgive the set pieces if the controls were still amazing, but they're not. The basic mechanics (shooting, aiming, moving from/to cover) don't feel good. I know the developer patched in improved controls at some point, but it still never felt correct to me. As far as enemy encounters go, the developer decided to include a melee combat system, but there are numerous problems with it; it's not in any way refined in a way that ever feels good and other enemies will continue to shoot you anytime you choose to implement it. Frustrations abound if you decide to use melee attacks but it feels sluggish and weird even as you die from an enemy's shotgun blast. Enemies aren't afraid to be more aggressive this time (annoyingly so) and will rush you incessantly. This leads to areas in which the sheer amount of enemies starts to feel repetitive and frustrating. Also, the same problem with Uncharted 2 is present here; there are certain enemy types that will not die without a ludicrous amount of ammunition unloaded on them. One last complaint; the story, while ambitious, is often good (never great) but the way in which it wraps up literally left me angry and with a bad taste of the game in general. I won't spoil the ending here, but it was rushed, it was forced and it was disappointing. I respect that this game is so divisive, that many people love it and some loathe it. I didn't like this game very much. It's not fun to play, and the story and pacing have real problems. However, there are plenty of positive reviews out there and if anyone ever reads this (doubtful) then at least know what you may be getting into.

      A mixed bag 0

Let me say straight away that Uncharted 2 is my favourite game of all time so Uncharted 3 had a lot to live up to. Reading other reviews of the game, with a general consensus of "more of the same", I was hugely looking forward to this. After just completing it however I have to say that it most certainly isn't Uncharted 2.2, it's more like Uncharted 1.7.Let me start with the good : when Uncharted 3 gets it right nothing else can touch it. The standout moment for me is the cargo plane sequence wh...

The one ring to rule them all. 0

For what it was, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was near perfect in my honest opinion. It bridged a chasm of platforming, shooting, puzzle and some occasional stealth obstacles, all smoothly fitted and handled like a dream (well, some of the stealth stuff was a little kooky). The storyline wasn't particularly deep, but it had style, flair and a great cast of characters. It's completely subjective of course, but many would likely consider Uncharted 2 as one of the greatest games of this current gener...
