The foundation for one of the best PS3 franchises
There are not a lot of early PlayStation 3 games that can be played this late in the console's life cycle. This however is definitely one of them. Probably the best selling franchise on the PS3, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is the game that started it all. Even now 5 years later, this game still manages to impress me even after I have beaten it so long ago. It is to Naughty Dog's credit that they have made a game that can withstand the tug of age so well and it shows the groundwork for what in my opinion is the best the system has to offer.
So what makes Uncharted so good? Well I is kind of like playing a good Indiana Jones game. Sure the last good game like that was on the genesis, but Uncharted is about a grand adventure to find gold. Nathan Drake, the main character is a distant relative of Sir Francis Drake and after receiving a ring with strange coordinates on it, he sets into motion an action packed trip to find the fabled El Dorado. Of course he is not the only person interested in becoming filthy rich so he will have many scaps along his quest.
This game has everything you could want. Plenty of action, a bit of romance, twisty plot, and fantastic writing are all wrapped up in a great looking package. Everything from the visuals to the score is phenomenal and aside from a few problems you will probably take away from the experience, this truly is gaming at its best.
The drawbacks are of course a bit of a let down. Predominately the gun fights. It really isn't that they are terrible. For one thing the enemy seems to have unlimited goons to throw at you in attempts to bar your progress because there are a hell of a lot of bad guys on this little island. The aiming feels a bit floaty as well which can become even more frustrating. The good part of the gun fights are the pretty dynamic AI of the enemy. They will duck and dodge in attempts to evade your sights. It is always nice to see a developer take a few extra months to make the enemy a bit more believable.
Believe it or not that is the only issue I have with this game. Everything else is exceptional. Really top notch. So aside from a bit of clunky gun play, this is a great game and worth a play through by any gamer who owns a PlayStation 3. So if you haven't started the Uncharted trilogy yet, start with this one and I bet you it won't take long before you are hooked.
