According to the Unreal Engine 3 wiki page on GiantBomb, Dead Space is powered by it. Really?
If it's true, then I am even more impressed by Dead Space. Because it is possibly the only game using Unreal Engine 3 I've played completely without texture pop-in.
Could anyone confirm that for me?

I bought Dead Space a couple of days ago and it's on the counter behind me. Ima check fo' yo'! Please hold.

Hmmm, it didn't say so on the box. I dunno for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised. UE3 gets around, if ya know what I mean. Even Mass Effect uses it. Which is strange, considering that Bioware has its own engine.

According to Wikipedia, it was built on the same engine that ran the 360/ps3 versions of The Godfather, which I can believe. It doesn't have the UE3 'look', I guess, if you know what I mean.
(Hint: Bloom EVERYWHERE.)

But then, it's Wikipedia, which isn't exactly a shining beacon of accuracy sometimes.

That's just a post process filter, games that don't want it can remove it. Epic clearly likes it and puts it everywhere.

I don't see texture pop in when I play UE3 games... Unless you mean on the 360, I don't know about that. I did think Dead Space had great polished visuals though. I first played it on an underpowered PC and it still held up very well with many options turned off, because even the most basic elements were so refined, like the textures themselves, rather than just effects piled on top. That's probably why the Wii game looks so nice, the team has true artists with an eye for details, not just people with technical know how.

Fair point. I guess the box thing mentioned in the second post would be the best indicator one way or another, or some trademark screen when booting the game. There'd be something marking it as having licensed UE3, at the least.

Wow really? It looks a hundred times better than that game.

Well, engines that are used a lot are constantly updated. Ie, the last released Splinter Cell game used the same engine as UT2004 (UE 2.5) yet looked miles beyond that with normal maps, real time lighting, etc. Not that I like the franchise, just saying.

If I remember correctly, there was a developer diary episode about Dead Space in which Glen Schoefield (the game's Executive Producer) mentioned showing the game to Cliffy B. According to him, Cliff mentioned that Dead Space barely looked like an Unreal Engine game, to which Glen said, "That's because it isn't." He very explicitly states the game does not run on the Unreal Engine.

The episode is/was available on the XLBM/PSN Store, so it may be worth checking out. In another episode they relate building a very specific room for the sole purpose of showcasing a horrid screeching noise the Audio guys recorded in the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit, light rail in the SF area) tunnel that runs under the SF Bay. Interesting stuff. I discinctly remember hearing that noise on a daily basis as I commuted in to SF from Oakland, and it was pretty horrific.

Yeah, I can't find UE3 logo or trademark on my Dead Space box, either. That's why I presumed it is not powered by UE3 engine, but then I accidentally saw the UE3 Engine wiki page here on GiantBomb... @_@
And another question, I also heard some people saying that RE5 uses UE3 Engine. I can't find UE3 logo or trademark on my RE5 box, either. That made me even more confusing...
Isn't Capcom use their own MT framework to build RE5?
If RE5 uses UE3 Engine too, then I must say the developers behind RE5 is really really good. Because aside from the fact  that there is basically no texture pop-in during my play through, the texture resolution is also one of the best I've ever seen on this generation of console...
I still remember even Gears2 has some texture pop-in and low-res textures...

Oh, and to Al3xand3r, yes, I was referring to games on 360. UE3 Engin's texture pop-in is always a some what unsolved ( or unable to solved ) problem on 360 as far as I know. @_@

I read somewhere that it was made with the Godfather engine. Makes sense as that was another EA game.

So the GiantBomb wiki probably is wrong? @_@

Unfortunately i'm to blame for this mistake. When looking around for info on the UE3 i must have come across something that mentioned it being used in Dead Space (obviously they were wrong) and I just stuck it on giant bomb thinking it was correct. It was a hell of a long time ago so im not sure exactly what happened but it'll be something like that.
