An often used plot device where the main character wakes up and has lost all their memories. The game usually centers around getting your memory back or uncovering the events that lead to your confusion.
Characters that are described and interact with the character primarily or only via audio (most often through dialogue, but usually also using some audio effects). As opposed to cutscenes which often emulate film, the way aural characters are presented in games often more closely parallels radio dramas and other audio-exclusive media.
The grues are an adventurer-consuming monster from the Zork series and other Infocom games. They appear in the dark areas of the game and are a major threat to adventurers.
Games in which players are guided through the game by characters via radio communication. Extremely popular narrative device and game mechanic in the current generation of video games.
This is when the events of a story are not in chronological order. Often, the end comes at the beginning, and the remaining story explains how things came to be the way they are.
A series of seemingly unrelated events that are tied together in one way or another. The term originates from the anime series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.
Popularized by franchises such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill, these games typically involve a strong implication of danger, vulnerable protagonists, and disturbing monsters.
A protagonist who betrays his or her allies.
The unreliable mentor is there to teach and guide you sometimes. Though other times, you just don't know what their intentions are, and whether you should trust them or not.
Supporting characters who are heard throughout the course of the game, but are never seen physically by the player.
