The Utroms first appeared in the original Mirage Comics as extra-terrestrials who covertly live amongst humans. Utroms are small, octopod-like creatures who live in humanoid robot bodies which are operated from the mid-section.
The original Krang is somewhat based upon them, but they are a species of brain-like aliens, whereas he is a disembodied alien brain. Though he is an entirely different species altogether, Krang was also retconned into an Utrom in the 2012 animated series and is also classified as an Utrom in the IDW comic. The 2012 cartoon has an alien species known as "The Kraang", which are a cult-like sect of Utroms who are bent on mutating the rest of the known universe and only answer to the ruling Kraang called Kraang Prime.
A prominent evil Utrom in the 2003 cartoon is Ch'rell, the Utrom Shredder.
