Attributes

Attributes are a numerical representation of a character's abilities who have their roots in RPGs. Today, attributes have spilled over to a wide range of game genres.
Boss Fight

A boss fight is a culminating challenge that pits the player against one or more enemies representing a greater threat and/or difficulty than those previously faced. These scenarios typically feature unique antagonists.
Break Arts

A Break Art is a special technique that can be learned for each type of weapon in a game
British Accent

Characters who speak with a British accent.
Combo

Typically found in fighting games, combos are a series of strung-together moves.
Cutscene

A non-interactive sequence within a game most often used for plot advancement.
Damage Numbers

A specific number that briefly floats above an enemy after an attack which displays the exact amount of damage the attack has done.
Dullahan

A headless horseman of Irish folklore. It is said to carry its own severed head, bearing a mischievous grin that reaches from one side of the face to the other.
Dungeon Crawling

A game where you crawl through dungeons. Often involves traps, treasure chests, and monsters.
E3 2000

The 2000 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) took place at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, California on May 11-13.
Gargoyles

Magical creatures made of stone, resembling the grotesque statues commonly part of Gothic architecture such as the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.
Giant Enemy Crab

A historically accurate enemy native to the Japanese coast. Flip it and attack the weak spot to inflict MASSIVE DAMAGE.
Greatest Hits

Greatest hits (Also known by other names) are games that generally have sold very well and warrant a re-release some time later. These games are also generally given a special or dropped price.
Grimoire

A book containing magic spells. Frequently used as in-game items to learn new abilities or magic spells.
Headshot

Most modern shooting games add the realistic touch of rendering shots to the cranium instantly fatal. Glorious for the shooter, kind of a bummer to the shootee.
Interactive Battle System

Allows the player to enhance an attack in a standard RPG battle by pressing a button or buttons in a pattern or at a specific time. Initially found in games such as FF6 and Super Mario RPG
Inventory

A gameplay mechanic allowing players to store their items and freely carry them around.
Late Title Card

When the title of the game does not appear immediately at the beginning of the game, but rather after a first mission or prologue.
Limb Targeting

Limb Targeting is the ability to target specific limbs on the body with the object being either to disable the limb or kill the target faster. It may also be referred to as the "Limb System" or "Localized Damage."
Magic

The concept of affecting the universe through supernatural methods, breaking the fundamental laws of science.
Metroidvania

A style of 2D action gameplay revolving around exploring a labyrinth with the necessity of locating new items and equipment to progress beyond otherwise impassible obstacles. The concept is named for its common usage in the Metroid and Castlevania franchises.
New Game Plus

A mode that allows a game to be replayed after a first completion, carrying over items, experience, weapons, and other elements from the first playthrough.
Non-Player Character

Characters controlled by the game for players to interact with, as opposed to player characters which are controlled by whomever is playing the game.
Not-So-Bad Guys

Characters that are initially portrayed as evil, but eventually turn out to be good or not as serious of a threat. This also includes villains who remain evil the entire game, but contain some sense of moral goodness or ambiguity.
One-Man Army

Main character declares when asked to wait for reinforcements: "I am the reinforcements"
Pausable Real Time Combat

Combat that takes place in real time, but that can be paused to give commands to certain characters.
Platform Exclusive

Third-party developers and publishers occasionally engage in the practice of releasing a title or piece of DLC on only one platform for any number of reasons. Sometimes these are permanent while others are only platform exclusive for a certain window of time.
PlayStation Underground

PlayStation Underground was a CD magazine published by Sony for the original PlayStation from 1997 to 2001. Each of the 17 issues included demos, video interviews, behind the scenes content, and much more.
Polygonal 3D

Who needs 2D when we've got 3D? 3D, or 3 dimensions, is what we're used to seeing in almost every game these days, letting us do all sorts of awesome stuff like run in circles!
