no seriously. cooking lessons? papercraft? calligraphy? duck tape art? geocaching?

it took 18 months to make uncharted 2: among thieves. episode 2 was like 3 years ago.
its a 5 hour episode... its not even a full game. they still use the same engine. ok slightly updated. but c'mon...
my money is on gabe cancelling whole thing. just like with half life 1. complete do over.

thank god for Portal 2.

but Im open to new ideas...

Ferret Racing? UFO spotting? Extreme Ironing?

Gabe secretly sent the whole team working on Half Life Episode 3 over  to Naughty Dog to help work on Uncharted 3.

I'm honestly unsure of what Valve is doing with HL as well. It seriously ticks me off when I consider that Valve has released three games in three years, and only one of them continued the story of Gordon Freeman.

Who knows, maybe they've run out of steam with the whole Half-Life thing?

They will never "run out of steam"

You prefer yearly releases until the IP is driven into the ground?  Having said that, it is due time for more Half Life!

Portal 2.  I don't think Valve is big enough to work on multiple massive projects at once...

#10 Posted by TonicBH (271 posts) -

Valve is a company that consists of about 200 employees working on various projects at a time. Episode 3 probably is being scrutinized heavily to assure that nobody gets a shitty finale.

And who says "it's not a full game?" Portal 2 is getting the full sequel treatment, I wouldn't be surprised if Episode 3 is as long and varied as HL2 was.

It's a Recession. They're conserving their energy til it runs its course.

#13 Posted by KinkyWizard (53 posts) -
@KingWilly:  you forget those games are made by mostly different teams. valve, like ea, have modular organization model. teams are separated. one programmer team and seperate dev teams per project. what is original half life 2 staff doing for three years? they had nothing to do with portal 1 but support. writers, art, everybody was brought new for the project...
#14 Posted by HandsomeDead (11863 posts) -

From the end of Half Life 2 and the Episodes, it seems clear that they are either writing it as they go along or they were and started stalling in an attempt to make the canon make sense. If the latter is true, I feel Portal 2 will be a lead in to Half Life 3.

#15 Posted by KinkyWizard (53 posts) -
@TonicBH:  gabe said its not a full game. half life 3 is on hold until new engine, they also talked about, is done...
#16 Posted by Oldirtybearon (4868 posts) -
@KinkyWizard: Which again makes me wonder why the hell Episode 3 is taking so long.

I honestly don't get it. Three years for a six hour expansion pack to Half-Life 2 should not be a problem. I mean, crikey, unless they're just playing WoW or generally dicking about all day every day for three years, where the hell is Episode 3?

I think what bugs me and most people is the fact that Valve has been mum about the whole thing. Not so much as a vague "It's coming along well". Just flat-out silence.
#17 Posted by mikeeegeee (1575 posts) -

I'm personally hoping that Episode 3 comes in the form of Half Life 3. A new engine would be neat, but even so, a full on game would be awesome even with the current Source engine. I mean, c'mon. HL1 came out in 1998, HL2 came out in 2004... okay, I guess it is about time they came out with a new iteration. I felt like the wait between HL1 and HL2 was much longer. Strange to think we've already waited that long yet again... must be that the episodes keep it fresh.

probally making episode 3 on a new engine.

#19 Posted by KinkyWizard (53 posts) -
@KingWilly: it made me mad. when ever I read 18 months for
uncharted 2: among thieves. that's a huge game no matter what you think of it. with tone of animation and
seriously enormous  levels. with 1/3 of valve team size.
in 18 months.
#20 Posted by FreakAche (2955 posts) -

Episode 3 does not exist. Get over it.

#21 Posted by CowMuffins (1760 posts) -
@KinkyWizard: Ok, here's the dealio:

Valve is really small, they don't have enough people to be working 100% on multiple games.
The multiplayer guys have been working on updates for TF2(class updates), L4D2 & 1(gameplay modes and mission like The Passing), and the updated Counter Strike: Source that's in beta right now.
It's obviously confirmed that they're working on Portal 2. During the development of Portal 2 and L4D2 they had a really small team making Alien Swarm.
There have also been supposed "leaked" screenshots of a new Source engine. The screenshots had pictures of a high-res Ant Lion in them, and looked quite nice.
Back a couple of months ago, Valve hired the man behind the popular Warcraft 3 mod, Defense of the Anceints, who goes by the name of IceFrog. It's recently been leaked that Valve is making their own version of the mod, when they trademarked the name "DotA".
Also, they're continuing to update their backcatalog of games and make them available on the Mac.

So, what's Valve doing? Quite a bit actually for a small team.

The thing I'm starting to suspect is that Valve is trying to market the Source Engine more by coming out with games other than First Person Shooters that use it. There are only a couple games that use the Source engine other than Valve's own games, like Dark Messiah and The Ship, and  I think they might want to change that.

Judging by how successful Steam is, designer drugs and ten-thousand dollar escorts.

#23 Posted by Diamond (8634 posts) -

Valve probably even has a fair number of employees just working on Steam itself.

#24 Posted by KinkyWizard (53 posts) -
@CowMuffins:  none of the original half life 2 team is working on any multiplayer games. well leads supervise and there is only one engie dev team and portal 2 is made by portal 1 team minus the girl plus new hired guy from some other mod team I forgot. and alien swarm is done by original mod team plus expert help from engie dev team. thats by their own words. Im telling you they either scrapt ep3 or making something new...

@Diamond:  steam guys are practicly separate company. Im not sure are they in the same building. there is option to sell steam, not happening in near future but it will my guess is nvidia if they have any brains. so steam guys got nothing to do with ep3...
#27 Posted by Geno (6477 posts) -

Gabe has confirmed several times that they are working on it and it is NOT cancelled. However no further details are really known.

Uncharted 2 is a regular-ass cover-based shooter with pretty graphics. I think it's safe to assume that Episode 3 -- or the full-blown sequel; whatever they're working on -- will be far more than that. Valve have also been working on a number of other games (Left 4 Dead and its sequel, Portal 2, Alien Swarm).

#31 Posted by ajamafalous (12129 posts) -

Valve is a company that, like Blizzard, takes their time with their releases instead of just shoveling things out the door.

Umm, the Half-Life games are just regular shooters with an above average story.

What's Valve doing? I'll tell you what they're doing. They're playing with my emotions!

After a while I was cool with them being dicks about Half-Life, because you know... Portal 2. But then that got delayed.

#38 Posted by BenX02 (305 posts) -

They are making Half-Life 3. It is so obvious. They realized there was to much story left to tell in one episode, so they switched to Half-Life 3 on Source 2.

#39 Posted by fuzzybunny566 (451 posts) -

they're actually the Stonecutters Society, with such other activies as keeping Atlantis off the maps, robbing cave fish of their sight, and keeping arcade games off xbox 360 game room

Did they even announce that Episode 3 was real? (Even Google doesn't have a firm source) Maybe they are just going straight into Half-Life 3.

This.

Valve has Steam. Blizzard has WoW. They both have all the time in the world to make their games.
#45 Posted by President_Barackbar (3472 posts) -

See, Valve makes so much damn money off of Steam that they don't really need to make tons of games to stay afloat.

#46 Posted by ch13696 (4582 posts) -

Well let's look at it this way. It took 6 years to bring out Half-Life 2 after the first Half-Life. Then you had separate episodes a year apart. If my calculations are correct, then we will see Half-Life 2: Episode 3 on September 20, 2010. You heard it here first.

#47 Posted by Meteora (5787 posts) -

They're obviously trying to figure out the mechanics of quantum physics for Episode 3.

I hate your avatar so much.... Your also right about episode 3.
#49 Posted by MancombSeepgood (345 posts) -

It's practically impossible, but I'd love for episode 3 to just show up on Steam one day with no announcements. It'd be the sort of epic thing Valve would do but I'm sure they're gonna want to show it off when it's done.

Aaanyway they're working on Portal 2 and if the rumours are to believed, this DOTA thing, so yeah, they haven't run out of steam.

#50 Posted by SleepyDoughnut (1239 posts) -

I bet it will be announced next year, and then at some point it will be delayed..
